Is Demodex Blepharitis connected with cataract surgery?
Demodex was firstly described by Henle and Simon in 1841 as the most common ectoparasite in the human body. Approximately a century later in 1962, Akbulatova and colleagues described 65 different species of Demodex, two of which are unique to the eyelids: Demodex Brevis (D. brevis) and Demodex Follicularium (D. follicularium)1. A year later, in 1963, Post, and colleagues affirmed that Demodex incidence increases with age. Therefore, Demodex can be found in 84% of the population in their sixties, and approximately in 100% of the population over the age of 702. (Source: American Journal of Ophthalmology)

Isolated corneal involvement by Lichen Planus - multi-modal evaluation
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: Ocular Lichen Planus can present as isolated corneal involvement independent from severe cicatrizing conjunctivitis. Appropriate and timely treatment can prevent irreversible ocular surface disease. Ophthalmologists should be aware of Lichenoid Tissue Reaction (LTR) disorders, especially in patients with relentless blepharitis and/or ocular surface disease.PMID:37192672 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231174931 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Phenotypic and Endotypic Determinants of Atopic Dermatitis Severity from the ADRN Registry
CONCLUSION: In a diverse US AD population, severity was associated with a history of atopic disorders, skin and extracutaneous bacterial and viral infections (by history and physical examination), higher IgE, eosinophilia and allergen sensitization, atopic skin manifestations (i.e., excoriation, hyperlinear palms and ichthyosis), and atopic ocular features (i.e., blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and ectropion) as well as asthma findings (i.e., wheezing). Data from our prospective registry significantly advances our understanding of AD phenotypes and endotypes, which is critical to achieve optimal management.PMID:37182563 | DOI...

A Case of Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus With Multiple Delayed Ocular Complications
We report a case of HZO with delayed onset of multiple ocular complications. A 72-year-old man developed HZO, blepharitis, iritis, and conjunctivitis in the left eye, which resolved after topical ocular treatment and systemic acyclovir administration. However, six weeks after the first onset of the rash, the patient came to our hospital because of recurrent blepharitis, iritis, scleritis, conjunctivitis, eye pain, ptosis, and blurred vision in the left eye. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the left eye had decreased to hand motion, and the Goldmann visual field test showed only mild residual peripheral vision on the ...

Analysis of google trends and search results for ophthalmic symptoms of monkeypox
ConclusionSearch interest in monkeypox ophthalmic symptoms corresponds with geographic and temporal trends, i.e., timing and location of the first reported non-endemic cases and WHO announcement. Although ophthalmic symptoms are not as widely searched currently, inclusion in public health messaging is key for diagnosis, appropriate management, and reduction of further transmission. Blepharitis and Neoplasms of the Canine Eyelid Margin and Skin
Canine eyelid masses (tumors) should include the differential clinical diagnoses of neoplasia and blepharitis. They have many common clinical signs including tumor, alopecia, and hyperemia. Biopsy and histologic examination remains the most effective diagnostic test to establish a confirmed diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Neoplasms are typically benign (tarsal gland adenomas, melanocytomas, and so forth) with the exception of lymphosarcoma. Blepharitis is noted in 2 age groups including dogs aged less than 1.5  years and middle aged to older dogs. Most blepharitis cases will respond to specific therapy once an accura...

Intraepithelial growth pattern for eyelid sebaceous carcinoma: a cohort of 214 patients from a single institution
Conclusions Intraepithelial tumour invasion was presented in nearly one third of patients with eyelid SC. Pagetoid intraepithelial neoplasia, the predominant growth pattern, significantly increased the risk of tumour-related mortality. Meticulous histopathological intraepithelial examination is recommended for every patient of eyelid SC. Special attention should be paid to those with pagetoid invasion, who may require more intensive managements. (Source: British Journal of Ophthalmology)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 60-year-old patient was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in November 2020, and started treatment in December 2020 with bortezomib, dexamethasone, and thalidomide. Four months later, he presented to the ophthalmology emergency department with inflammation and pain in the left eye. Examination of the anterior segment revealed severe, mixed anterior squamous blepharitis with significant bilateral palpebral inflammation, dysfunction of the meibomian glands, and several styes on both eyelids bilaterally. A peripheral ulcera...

The effect of short-term air pollutants exposure on outpatient admission for blepharitis in Shanghai, China: a hospital-based study
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Feb 6. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-25605-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBlepharitis is a very common ophthalmologic disease, and few studies have examined if air pollutants contribute to the risk of blepharitis. We investigated the presence of any potential correlation between exposure to air pollution and outpatient admission for blepharitis in Shanghai, China. Data on daily outpatient admission for blepharitis were collected from January 2017 to July 2022. Air pollution and meteorological data were acquired from the Shanghai Environmental Protection Agency. Using the distributed lag non-lin...
