Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 1900: Enhancing Genetic Gains in Grain Yield and Efficiency of Testing Sites of Early-Maturing Maize Hybrids under Contrasting Environments
This study assessed the following: (i) accelerated genetic advancements in grain yield and other measured traits of early-maturing maize hybrids, (ii) ideal test environments for selecting early-maturing multiple-stress tolerant hybrids, and (iii) high-yielding and stable hybrids across multiple-stress and non-stress environments. Fifty-four hybrids developed during three periods of genetic enhancement (2008–2010, 2011–2013, and 2014–2016) were evaluated in Nigeria, The Republic of Benin, and Ghana under multiple stressors (Striga infestation, managed drought, and Low N) and non-st...

Association between urban-rural location and prevalence of type 2 diabetes and impaired fasting glucose in West Africa: a cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study
Conclusion The prevalence of both T2DM and IFG was more than two times as high in urban areas compared with rural areas in West Africa. Behavioural risk factors are common among urban populations, with ongoing urbanisation expected to drive increases in the prevalence of T2DM. These results could guide planning for T2DM screening, preventive strategies and resource allocation in West Africa. (Source: BMJ Open)

Durability of the deltamethrin-treated polypropylene long-lasting net LifeNet ® in a pyrethroid resistance area in south western Benin: A phase III trial
ConclusionLifeNet® LLINs did meet WHO criteria for bio-efficacy throughout the study period and were well accepted by the population. This is an important step towards getting a full WHO recommendation for use in malaria endemic countries. (Source: PLoS One)

Exploring the association between household access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services and common childhood diseases using data from the 2017-2018 Demographic and Health Survey in Benin: focus on diarrhoea and acute respiratory infection
Conclusion We suggest reinforcing household access to basic sanitation services to combat diarrhoea in children under 5 years. Further research is needed on the effects of WASH interventions on diarrhoea and acute respiratory infection in children under 5 years. (Source: BMJ Open)

Physiotherapy practices in acute and sub-acute stroke in a low resource country: A prospective observational study in Benin
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of long-term disability worldwide.1 Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear the heavy burden, with approximately 70  % of stroke-related deaths and 87 % of stroke-related disabilities.2,3 Cardiorespiratory deconditioning is common after stroke, negatively impacting functional recovery and participation in normal daily activities and increasing the risk of stroke recurrence and other cardiometabolic diseases.4– 6 From the first week until the first-month post-stroke (acute and early subacute phase), there is a critical time for neural plasticity,3 and is an important treatm...
