The impact of processing technology on microbial community composition and functional properties of Beninese maize ogi
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Mar 17;416:110683. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110683. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraditionally fermented maize starch, called ogi, is produced to prepare akpan, a yoghurt-like street food widely consumed in Benin. Current maize ogi production practices were compared to assess the impact of different processing technologies on the characteristics of the fermented product as a basis to determine best practices. Maize starch slurry samples were collected from processors in five municipalities in southern Benin and analysed before fermentation (starch samples) and after spontaneous fermentati...

Work environment and hypertension in industrial settings in Benin in 2019: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions Occupational factors, particularly job strain and recognition at work, are modifiable factors associated with hypertension in the ginning plants sector and deserve to be corrected through occupational health promotion and prevention. (Source: BMJ Open)

Monitoring Aedes populations for arboviruses, Wolbachia, insecticide resistance and its mechanisms in various agroecosystems in Benin
Acta Trop. 2024 Mar 8:107178. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107178. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAedes mosquitoes are the main vectors of arboviruses in Benin. Cases of dengue have been reported in Benin with all four serotypes of the virus actively circulating in this region. Some agricultural settings are known to harbor Aedes vectors responsible for the transmission of arboviruses. The massive use of certain insecticides in agricultural settings has probably contributed to insecticide resistance in these vectors. In Benin, the susceptibility of arbovirus vectors to insecticides is poorly studied. In addition, the dis...

Women ’s empowerment, modern energy, and demand for maternal health services in Benin
This study analyses the extent to which modern energies improve women ’s empowerment and the demand for maternal health services in a low income country. The empirical estimations were based on the 2017 Benin Demographic Health Survey data. We adopted the trivariate recursive probit modelling to find out the extent to which modern energies improve women’s empowerm ent and the demand for maternal health services. The results revealed that the demand for maternal health services was significantly and positively associated with women’s empowerment. Notably, being an empowered woman (social independence and decision-maki...

Is child anemia associated with early childhood development? A cross-sectional analysis of nine Demographic and Health Surveys
We examined the association s between severe or moderate anemia and ECD domains (literacy-numeracy, physical, social-emotional, and learning) and an overall ECD index among children age 36–59 months. Nine Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) from phase VII of The DHS Program (DHS-7) that included the ECD module and hemoglobi n testing in children under age five years were used. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were run for each of the five outcomes. Multivariate models controlled for early learning/interaction variables, child, maternal, and paternal characteristics, and socio-economic and household chara ...

Birth asphyxia and its association with grand multiparity and referral among hospital births: A prospective cross ‐sectional study in Benin, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda
ConclusionsThere is some evidence of an increased risk of birth asphyxia for grand multiparous women having babies at hospitals, especially following intrapartum referral. Antenatal counseling should recognize grand multiparity as higher risk and advise appropriate childbirth facilities. Findings in Malawi suggest an advantage of health systems configuration requiring further exploration. (Source: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica)
