‘Now we know where the dead went.’ Did grave robbers plunder battlefields?
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a succession of wars ravaged Europe. Massive armies squared off and massacred each other using cannon and rifle fire and mass cavalry charges that claimed tens of thousands of casualties in hours. At the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte’s final battle, more than 10,000 men and as many horses were killed in a single day. Yet today, archaeologists often struggle to find physical evidence of the dead from that bloody time period. Plowing and construction are usually the culprits behind missing historical remains, but they can’t explain the loss here. How did so many bo...

Cost-effectiveness of romosozumab for the treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk of fracture in Belgium
ConclusionSequential treatment with romosozumab followed by alendronate was found to be cost-effective compared to alendronate monotherapy and dominant compared to teriparatide followed by alendronate for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk of fracture in Belgium. GSE196788 Nucleotide metabolism in cancer cells fuels a UDP-driven macrophage cross-talk promoting immunosuppression and immunotherapy resistance [RNAseq_Panc02_sgNT_sgCda_tumor]
Contributor : Massimiliano MazzoneSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusPurpose: Here we use Here, we used RNA sequencing to identify trascriptictomic profile of sgNT and sgCda PancO2 tumor bearing-mice.Methods: 4x10e6 sgNT and sgCda Panc02 cells were injected subcutaneously (s.c.) in the right flank of the C57BL/6J mouse in a final suspension of 200 μL PBS. Tumor volumes were measured at least three times per week. At day 16 after injection, tumor-bearing mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and RNA was isolated from tumor tissue using TRIzol (Life Technologies). ...

Contributor : Massimiliano MazzoneSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusPurpose: To study the effects of CDA depletion on PancO2 cell line. Here, we used RNA sequencing to understand if sgCda can alter cancer cell immunogenicity by looking at mutational burden. Methods: PancO2 cancer cells were transduced with a doxycycline-inducible Cas9 nuclease (Edit-R Inducible Lentiviral Cas9, Dharmacom) and selected with blasticidin (Bio-Connect). Cells expressing the doxycycline-inducible Cas9 nuclease were transduced with a target specific gRNA for CDA and a control non-targeting NT...

Clinician perspectives on policy approaches to genetic risk disclosure in families
In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with clinicians from Belgian clinical genetics centers to gain insight into their perspectives on policy approaches to the disclosure of genetic risk within families. Using real-world examples of legislation and court rulings from France, Australia, and the UK, we explored clinician viewpoints on the roles and responsibilities of both patients and clinicians in the family communication process. Clinicians expressed confusion regarding what was legally permissible regarding contacting at-risk relatives. While there was a consensus among participants that patients have a...

Is There a Gender Gap in the Birthday-Number Effect? The Case of Lotto Players and the Role of Sequential Choice
AbstractThe literature on lottery gambling shows that players do not select numbers randomly, a phenomenon which is called conscious selection. Mainly, players prefer “small” numbers (less than thirty), either because of the existence of small lucky numbers or because they are victims of the so-called birthday-number effect. Because lotto games are parimutuel, such preferences result in poor ticket choices in terms of achieving below average returns. Using da ta from Belgium, where approximately 10% of the population plays lotto games every week, this paper extends prior literature by documenting the existence of a gen...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2108: Spatially Explicit Active Learning for Crop-Type Mapping from Satellite Image Time Series
ijker The availability of a sufficient number of annotated samples is one of the main challenges of the supervised methods used to classify crop types from remote sensing images. Creating these samples is time-consuming and costly. Active Learning (AL) offers a solution by streamlining sample annotation, resulting in more efficient training with less effort. Unfortunately, most of the developed AL methods overlook spatial information inherent in remote sensing images. We propose a novel spatially explicit AL that uses the semi-variogram to identify and discard redundant, spatially adjacent samples. It was evaluated usi...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 504: Sequences Related to Chimay Rhabdovirus Are Widely Distributed in Ixodes ricinus Ticks across England and Wales
holas Johnson Ticks are the main arthropod vector of pathogens to humans and livestock in the British Isles. Despite their role as a vector of disease, many aspects of tick biology, ecology, and microbial association are poorly understood. To address this, we investigated the composition of the microbiome of adult and nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks. The ticks were collected on a dairy farm in Southwest England and RNA extracted for whole genome sequencing. Sequences were detected from a range of microorganisms, particularly tick-associated viruses, bacteria, and nematodes. A majority of the viruses were attributed to phl...

Precarious employment and mental health in the Belgian service voucher system: the role of working conditions and perceived financial strain
ConclusionThese findings are the first based on the Belgian Employment Precariousness Scale (EPRES-BE) and are consistent with earlier-made —but seldom simultaneously tested—assumptions on the mechanisms relating PE to adverse mental health—i.e. involving direct associations and indirect associations via adverse working conditions and material deprivation. Based on the results, we recommend more democratic and higher-quality manag ement practices in the SVS, in addition to higher wages and working time reduction. Adherence and Persistence to Basal Insulin Among People with Type  2 Diabetes in Europe: A Systematic Literature Review and Meta-analysis
ConclusionThe results highlight that almost half of patients with T2D in Western Europe have poor adherence to insulin therapy and, at 18  months, one in three patients do not persist on treatment. These findings call for new basal insulin therapies and diabetes management strategies that can improve treatment persistence and adherence among people with T2D. (Source: Diabetes Therapy)
