BASHH feedback from the 2023 IUSTI-Europe conference in Malta
There is a growing relationship between BASHH and IUSTI.1 In 2023, several BASHH scholars were invited to give feedback on the IUSTI conference in Malta. Asymptomatic STI screening: Chris Kenyon, (Belgium) Despite good evidence for HIV and syphilis screening in asymptomatic patients, evidence is lacking for other STIs, for example, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. Kenyon et al2 highlighted the potential harms of widespread screening for asymptomatic STIs, particularly in HIV-pre-exposure prophylaxis (HIV-PrEP) cohorts, namely increased antimicrobial consumption and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In Belgium...

Assessing uncertainty in airborne birch pollen modelling
AbstractIn Europe, more than one quarter of the adult population and one third of the children suffer from pollinosis, but the geographical variability is large. In Belgium, at least  ~ 10% of the people develop allergies due to birch pollen. These patients may benefit from a forecasting system that raises alerts when episodes with huge amount of airborne birch pollen grains are expected. Such a forecast system for birch pollen was established for the Belgian territory in 20 23 based on the pollen emission and transport model System for Integrated modeLling of Atmospheric coMposition (SILAM). The question, however, is ...

Long-term follow up of alemtuzumab-treated patients: a retrospective study in a Belgian tertiary care center
ConclusionATZ is a high efficacy therapy for active MS, providing long-term remission in a significant proportion of patients. Retreatment was more frequent in younger patients or patients having failed a higher number of previous DMTs. (Source: Acta Neurologica Belgica)

The potential impact fraction of population weight reduction scenarios on non-communicable diseases in Belgium: application of the g-computation approach
Overweight is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Europe, affecting almost 60% of all adults. Tackling obesity is therefore a key long-term health challenge and is vital to reduce prema... (Source: BMC Medical Research Methodology)

Perceived Hospital Preparedness Is Negatively Associated With Pandemic-Induced Psychological Vulnerability in Primary Care Employees: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Observational Study
CONCLUSIONS: Difficult working conditions during the pandemic had a major impact on the psychological wellbeing of emergency department HPs, but this effect might have been lessened if they had been informed about adequate measures for minimizing the risk of exposure.PMID:38600791 | DOI:10.1002/cpp.2969 (Source: Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy)

Evaluation of the thiazide challenge test to differentiate primary from hypercalciuria-related hyperparathyroidism
CONCLUSION: the TCT aids in discriminating patients with PHPT from those with SHPT-IH based on a rise in serum calcium. Other parameters are not different between both groups. Larger prospective trials are necessary to further define the diagnostic potential of the TCT, its most appropriate biochemical outcome variables, and decision cut-offs.PMID:38605120 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae239 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)
