Experimental accumulation and depuration kinetics and natural occurrence of microcystin-LR in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.)
Environ Pollut. 2024 Mar 8:123715. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.123715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicrocystin-LR (MC-LR) is a hepatotoxic metabolite that naturally occurs during some cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic waterbodies, and irrigation of edible plants with MC-LR-contaminated water causes bioaccumulation of the toxin. However, sufficient information about accumulation and depuration mechanics in hydroculture-grown herb plants is still lacking. This work aimed at 1) investigating bioaccumulation and depuration of MC-LR in basil, 2) verifying the possible MC-LR detoxification mechanisms in the plant, and 3) detec...

Estimating and monetizing the causal effect of severe interpersonal violence against children in sports on subjective well-being
CONCLUSIONS: We have found evidence for a causal effect of severe IV in childhood on the SWB later in life. The results highlight the long-term, extensive impact of experiencing severe IV in sports that exceeds direct physical and psychological health outcomes.PMID:38457982 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106719 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

The Vaccine Training Barometer: Assessing healthcare providers' confidence to answer vaccine-related questions and their training needs
Vaccine. 2024 Mar 7:S0264-410X(24)00254-8. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHealthcare providers (HCP) are seen by the public as the most trustworthy source of information about vaccination. While HCPs could be a valuable partner to increase vaccine confidence in general, it is not clear whether they feel confident themselves to address questions concerning vaccination. In the context of the EU Joint Action on Vaccination (EU-JAV), the Vaccine Training Barometer, an online survey tool, was developed to assess how frequently HCPs receive questions about vaccination, how confident they feel t...

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation versus surgical aortic valve replacement in severe aortic stenosis patients at low surgical mortality risk: a cost-effectiveness analysis in Belgium
CONCLUSION: TAVI with SAPIEN 3 may offer a meaningful alternative intervention to SAVR in Belgian low-risk patients with sSAS, showing both clinical benefits and cost savings associated with post-procedure patient management.PMID:38450496 | DOI:10.1080/00015385.2023.2282283 (Source: Acta Cardiologica)

Modeling arsenic in European topsoils with a coupled semiparametric (GAMLSS-RF) model for censored data
Environ Int. 2024 Mar 1;185:108544. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2024.108544. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTArsenic (As) is a versatile heavy metalloid trace element extensively used in industrial applications. As is carcinogen, poses health risks through both inhalation and ingestion, and is associated with an increased risk of liver, kidney, lung, and bladder tumors. In the agricultural context, the repeated application of arsenical products leads to elevated soil concentrations, which are also affected by environmental and management variables. Since exposure to As poses risks, effective assessment tools to support environment...

Frequency and timing of adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines; A multi-country cohort event monitoring study
CONCLUSION: Despite some limitations due to study design and study-roll out, CEM studies can allow prompt and almost real-time observations of the safety of medications directly from a patient-centered perspective, which can play a crucial role for regulatory bodies during an emergency setting such as the COVID-19 pandemic.PMID:38448322 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.001 (Source: Vaccine)
