High carriage of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes by ESBL-producing and fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli recovered from animal waste dumps
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that animal wastes disposed indiscriminately into dumps could be a budding 'hotspot' for multidrug resistant, ESBL-producing and fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli carrying multiple genes encoding resistance to fluoroquinolone antibiotics.PMID:38491992 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09228-8 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Anaerobic antibiotic coverage in aspiration pneumonia and the associated benefits and harms: A retrospective cohort study
Chest. 2024 Feb 20:S0012-3692(24)00260-5. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2024.02.025. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Antibiotics with extended anaerobic coverage are commonly used to treat aspiration pneumonia, which is not recommended by current guidelines.RESEARCH QUESTION: In patients admitted to hospital for community-acquired aspiration pneumonia, is there a difference between antibiotic therapy with limited anaerobic coverage (LAC) versus antibiotic therapy with extended anaerobic coverage (EAC) in terms of in-hospital mortality and risk of Clostridioides difficile colitis?METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrosp...

Hound: a novel tool for automated mapping of genotype to phenotype in bacterial genomes assembled de novo
Brief Bioinform. 2024 Jan 22;25(2):bbae057. doi: 10.1093/bib/bbae057.ABSTRACTIncreasing evidence suggests that microbial species have a strong within species genetic heterogeneity. This can be problematic for the analysis of prokaryote genomes, which commonly relies on a reference genome to guide the assembly process. Differences between reference and sample genomes will therefore introduce errors in final assembly, jeopardizing the detection from structural variations to point mutations-critical for genomic surveillance of antibiotic resistance. Here we present Hound, a pipeline that integrates publicly available tools to...

Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of triple antibiotic paste and amoxicillin clavulanate paste as an intracanal medicament against Enterococcus faecalis: An in vitro study
Conclusion: Considering the limitations of this in vitro study, the findings suggest that ACP couldbe an effective alternative intracanal medicament to TAP for endodontic therapy.Key Words: Amoxicillin ‑potassium clavulanate combination, antibacterial agent, calcium hydroxide, ciprofloxacin, Enterococcus faecalis, metronidazole, minocycline (Source: Dental Research Journal)

Multiple Retained Needles in the Neck of a Drug User: A Case Report
We report the case of a 43-year-old male having a medical record of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C who presented to our department with a 3-day history of a febrile lateral neck swelling. He reported a history of repetitive intravenous drug use and previous abscesses that were surgically drained. We noted a left and tender 8 cm neck swelling with torticollis. Computed tomography scan showed a collected myositis of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in association to multiple metallic foreign bodies at the neck that were compatible with the aspect of broken needles. Imagery also showed a thrombosis of the ipsilate...

Identifying the Best Initial Oral Antibiotics for Adults with Community-Acquired Pneumonia: A Network Meta-Analysis
ConclusionWe observed trends toward a better clinical response and lower mortality for quinolones as empiric antibiotics for CAP, but found no conclusive evidence of any antibiotic being clearly more effective than another. More trials are needed to inform guideline recommendations on the most effective antibiotic regimens for outpatients with mild to moderate CAP. (Source: Journal of General Internal Medicine)

Quality Assessment of Selected Essential Antimicrobial Drugs from Drug Retail Outlets of Selected Cities in Eastern Ethiopia
The objective of this study was to assess the quality of four commonly used antimicrobials marketed in the cities of Dire Dawa and Jijiga and the town of Togo-Wuchale, which have high potential for illegal drug trade activities in Ethiopia because they are located near the border with Somalia. A total of 54 brands/samples of amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin formulations were collected covertly from 43 facilities using a convenience sampling strategy from March 16 to March 29, 2022. The samples were first screened using Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF)-Minilab protocols and then analy...

Clavulanic acid sensitization seems more involved in cutaneous than systemic reactions in amoxicilline-clavulanate drug reactions
Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol. 2024 Feb 13. doi: 10.23822/EurAnnACI.1764-1489.329. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBLs allergy is considered a major health issue, as BLs are the most frequently involved in drug allergic reactions. Amoxicillin (AX) is the most frequently involved drug in sensitization among all BLs. AX is commercialized alone or combined to clavulanic acid (CLA) in order to increase the antibiotic spectrum. The growing prescriptions of AX-CLA formulations contributed to increase the role of CLA as an allergy inducer. At present, little is known about the clinical characteristics of hypersensitivity reactions t...
