Overcoming Mental Blocks
Recently I’ve been pondering how our mind’s expectations often block us from experiencing more richness and possibility. Even when we set goals and invite new desires, we can easily stop ourselves from taking accessible actions to advance. This month I ran into my own personal example of this phenomenon. One aspirational goal that I set months ago was to eventually do an hour-long group training session at my gym called UltraFit. That class looked intimidating from the online videos I’d seen of it. You can see the description on the UltraFit web page if you’re curious, with lines like “Our ...

Evidence for Age-Related Hearing Loss to Contribute to Cognitive Impairment
This study provides (to the authors' knowledge) the first quantitative evidence that the diagnosis of dementia is associated with subsequent lower persistence of hearing-aid use. This may be due to reduced abilities to perform instrumental activities, or diverse other mechanisms, including memory problems, reduced motivation to engage in social interaction, and carers prioritising other aspects of care. Aging in Place or Assisted Living: It's About Choices
It's not hard to understand why 60-year-olds would say that they want to remain in their home for life rather than move to assisted living or a nursing home. These are generally people who are relatively healthy and feel that they can hire help for whatever they need down the road. Indeed, aging in place sounds like a wonderful concept. What could possibly be wrong with it? The Washington Post interviewed Stephen M. Golant, a University of Florida professor of gerontology, about the trend. Golant views the current. He feels that people should have choices and that aging in place is just one of them. Golant said in the int...

The Art of The Nasopharyngeal Airway
I would surely rank the nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) as one of the most under-rated / under-utilized pieces of equipment in the EMT bag of tricks. They’re useful, simple and versatile. As a group, we tend to do a pretty good job oxygenating our patients, but I think we drop the ball on BLS airway adjuncts. Most of our unresponsive or semi-responsive patients should be arriving at the ER with an NPA in place. If you’re bagging a patient they should have one … maybe two NPAs in place. They’re fast, they’re friendly, they work much better on the semi-conscious and they don’t stim...

OTC Hearing Aids —Did the FDA Give Patients Access with One Hand and Take Access Away with the Other?
Jeffrey A. SingerOctober 17, 2022 marked the day that hearing aids became available over the counter to people over age 18 with mild ‐to‐moderate hearing loss. TheOver ‐the‐Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017, a rider to theFDA Reauthorization Act of 2017, ordered the Food and Drug Administration to create a new category, OTC hearing aids, as devices that use air conduction to improve hearing for people in the above category. This good news can make hearing aids more affordable and accessible for an estimated30 million people who suffer from hearing loss. Opening this market will generate competiti...

Veteran Caregiver for Multiple Elders Tells It Like It Is
When I first started sharing my stories and looking for others who had similar tales to tell, people tended to be reticent about speaking up. Now, sharing caregiver "in the trenches" stories has become a major part of caregiver self-care and even survival. Because of my long Internet history, I'm often interviewed in print and on radio. A recent radio interview on a show called "Doing What Works," hosted by Maureen Anderson, touched on many topics that I've written about for Healthcentral.com over time, so I'm sharing links to those stories here for those who want to dig deeper. The first question Maureen asked is how my...
