The trends in death of primary liver cancer caused by specific etiologies worldwide: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 and implications for liver cancer management
CONCLUSION: From 1990 to 2019, there was a worldwide decrease in deaths caused by liver cancer and its underlying causes. However, rising tendencies have been observed in low-resource regions and countries. The trends in drug use- and high BMI-related death from liver cancer and its underlying etiologies were concerning. The findings indicated that efforts should be increased to prevent liver cancer deaths through improved etiology control and risk management.PMID:37380957 | DOI:10.1186/s12885-023-11038-3 (Source: Cancer Control)

Remote Activation of Enzyme Nanohybrids for Cancer Prodrug Therapy Controlled by Magnetic Heating
ACS Nano. 2023 Jun 26. doi: 10.1021/acsnano.3c01599. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerein, we have developed nanohybrids (nHs) to remotely activate a therapeutic enzyme for its use in Directed Enzyme Prodrug Therapy (DEPT). The coencapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) using biomimetic silica as an entrapment matrix was optimized to obtain nanosized hybrids (∼150 nm) for remote activation of the therapeutic enzyme. HRP converts indole-3-acetic acid (3IAA) into peroxylated radicals, whereas MNPs respond to alternating magnetic fields (AMFs) becoming local hotspots. The AMF applicat...

Generation of three induced pluripotent stem cell lines (RAUi001-A, RAUi001-B and RAUi001-C) from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of a healthy Armenian individual
Stem Cell Res. 2023 Jun 17;71:103147. doi: 10.1016/j.scr.2023.103147. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study of pathological processes in cells carrying mutations should be carried out in comparison with a healthy control group. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), which is caused by a mutation in the MEFV gene, is predominantly found in people of Armenian nationality with the prevalence of 14-100 per 10000. We have obtained induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from Armenian healthy patient, which will be included as a control group in the study of this disease. iPSCs rapidly proliferate in colonies of cells with a typic...

The spatiotemporal variation, background, and baseline activities of radionuclides in the soil of Aragats Massif (Armenia)
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jun 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28231-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study was performed to reveal the distribution patterns and spatiotemporal changes of radionuclides in the soil of the highest mountain of Armenia: Aragats Massif. In this regard, two surveys were implemented in 2016-2018 and 2021 with an altitudinal sampling strategy. The activities of radionuclides were determined by gamma spectrometry system with HPGe detector (CANBERRA). Correlation and linear regression analysis were applied to determine the dependence of radionuclides' distribution from altitude. Classi...

Lung cancer screening beliefs in Armenia
This study employed a rigorously-translated, previously-validated survey based on the Expanded Health Belief Model to understand how Armenian male smokers’ beliefs would affect lung cancer screening participation.ResultsSurvey responses highlighted key health beliefs that would mediate screening participation. Most respondents felt they were at risk for lung cancer, but over 50% also believed their cancer risk was equivalent to (or less than) non-smokers’ risk. Respondents also overwhelmingly agreed a scan could help detect cancer earlier, but fewer agreed early detection could reduce cancer mortality. Important barrie...

Conditional survival and standardized mortality ratios of patients with severe aplastic anemia surviving at least one year after hematopoietic cell transplantation or immunosuppressive therapy
We report on conditional survival and standardized mortality ratios (SMR), which compares the mortality risk with the general population adjusted for age, gender, and race/ethnicity, in patients with SAA alive for at least 12 months after treatment with IST or HCT between 2000 and 2018. Two treatment periods were defined a priori (2000-2010, 2011-2018), given changes to treatment regimens and differences in length of follow-up. The SMRs of patients treated during the period 2000-2010 and survived 1 year were 3.50 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.62-4.58), 4.12 (95% CI 3.20-5.21), and 8.62 (95% CI 6.88-10.67) after IST, mat...

HPV Vaccination and Cervical Cancer Screening Policies and Practices in 18 Countries, Territories and Entities across Eastern Europe and Central Asia
CONCLUSIONS: Cervical cancer prevention services in this region are very limited. Achieving the WHO Global Strategy targets by 2030 will require substantial investments in capacity building by international development organisations.PMID:37247301 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2023.24.5.1781 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)
