Conventional herniorrhaphy followed by laparoscopic appendectomy for a variant of Amyand ’s hernia: a case report
ConclusionsUnlike the traditional definition of Amyand ’s hernia, where the appendix is initially in the hernia sac, the current case demonstrated that Amyand’s hernia could be a type of delayed presentation following initial medical treatment of acute appendicitis. However, it can still be managed successfully by a conventional tissue-based hernior rhaphy followed by laparoscopic appendectomy. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Case report: A novel case of paraneoplastic voltage gated calcium channel antibodies secondary to appendiceal adenocarcinoma
Voltage gated calcium channels (VGCCs) play a critical role in neural transmission. Antibodies that target these ion channels can disrupt cellular signal transmission resulting in various clinical presentations. VGCC antibodies are most commonly associated with paraneoplastic syndromes such as Lambert-Eatons myasthenic syndrome. Here, we report a 47-year-old female with Stage IV appendiceal adenocarcinoma status post appendectomy and right hemicolectomy, who presented with progressive memory impairment, aphasia, ataxia, weakness, and headache. Neurologic exam was notable for right-sided parietal drift, decreased right arm ...

Improved Tool to Assess Complicated Appendicitis Probability
The notion of uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis being 2 different diseases is supported by the accumulating evidence showing imaging-confirmed uncomplicated appendicitis resolving with antibiotics or even with supportive care alone. This sets new standards for preinterventional appendicitis diagnostics, shifting the emphasis from solely assessing the presence of appendicitis toward accurately distinguishing between uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis. Optimizing the treatment alternatives according to appendicitis severity requires further improvement of this challenging differential diagnosis. From a clini...

Clinical statistical analysis plan for the ACCURE trial: the effect of appendectomy on the clinical course of ulcerative colitis, a randomised international multicentre trial
The primary treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) is medical therapy using a standard step-up approach. An appendectomy might modulate the clinical course of UC, decreasing the incidence of relapses and reducin... (Source: Trials)

Ovarian Yolk Sac Tumors: Is Fertility Preservation Possible?
In this study, we described three patients with ovarian yolk sac tumors and their fertility preservation treatments. These cases has reminded that in young age with high AFP levels and rapidly growing ovarian mass, diagnosis of the yolk sac tumor has to be kept in mind.PMID:38525405 | PMC:PMC10958718 | DOI:10.4103/abr.abr_112_21 (Source: Biomed Res)

Development and assessment of a loop ligation simulator for laparoscopic appendectomy
ConclusionWe succeeded in developing a simulator for loop ligation of the appendix during laparoscopic appendectomy. Participants significantly improve in handling the loops. The transferability of the skill learned during simulation to the operating room will be subject of a follow-up study. (Source: Pediatric Surgery International)

Neuroendocrine tumor of the appendix masquerading as acute appendicitis with a mucocele on CT scan: a rare finding
CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the importance of considering NETs of the appendix in the differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Imaging studies can provide valuable information, but the definitive diagnosis is made through histopathological examination. The treatment approach for NETs of the appendix depends on various factors and requires a multidisciplinary approach for optimal management.PMID:38499895 | DOI:10.1186/s40792-024-01870-5 (Source: Ann Oncol)
