The Relationship Between Post-Operative Systemic Inflammation and Early Mortality in Patients With Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
The mortality from ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (rAAAs) remains substantial. An association between the development of a systemic inflammatory response syndrome, multi-organ failure, and higher early mortality has been previously described. The magnitude of systemic inflammation can be assessed using routinely performed blood tests, such as C-reactive protein (CRP). An association between elevated post-operative CRP and inferior outcomes has been described in patients undergoing resection for colorectal cancer. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Melioidosis Mycotic Aortic Aneurysms – a Review of the North Queensland Experience
Melioidosis is an infection of Burkholderia (B.) pseudomallei, a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium endemic to North Queensland and South-East Asia, causing a disease with high mortality. Mycotic aneurysms from melioidosis are rare, with less than 20 described in the literature. These aneurysms tend to be saccular, with operative options including endovascular stent-graft coverage or ligation and excision with extra-anatomical bypass reconstruction. We reviewed our management of melioid mycotic aortic aneurysms in a high-volume vascular surgery unit in North Queensland. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

One-Year Outcomes of Fragile Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Patients Electively Treated in Two Italian Centers
To evaluate the outcome of a fragile patients ’ population electively treated for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) by either open surgery with an enhanced repair protocol (OSER) or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) in two Italian academic high-volume vascular centers. Conformable Infrarenal Endograft in AAA Treatment: Could We Achieve Comparable Outcomes in Hostile and Favorable Proximal Aortic Neck Anatomy?
Hostile proximal aortic neck still represents a challenge in endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) treatment, potentially increasing the risk of type 1A endoleak. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

The Effect of Family History of Aortic Disease on Outcomes of Fenestrated-Branched Endovascular Aneurysm Repair of Complex Aortic Aneurysms
The clinical significance of family history (FH) of aortic disease on the outcomes of fenestrated-branched endovascular aneurysm repair (FB-EVAR) has not been well described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of FH of aortic disease on outcomes after FB-EVAR of complex aortic aneurysms (CAAs). (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

Aortic\Height Index as a Predictor of Symptomatic Status in Patients With AAA in a Southern Brazilian Population
The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of using the aortic/height index (AHI) compared to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) diameter alone in risk-stratifying patients and predicting the likelihood of presentation with a symptomatic or ruptured aneurysm in a Southern Brazilian population. Additionally, we evaluated the AHI as a predictor of in-hospital mortality. (Source: Journal of Vascular Surgery)

AAA in Women: A Fast-track Protocol to Enhance Open Aortic Repair
Women experience higher mortality and complication rates than men after elective treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Moreover, the results disfavor the endovascular approach (EVAR) as compared to open surgical repair (OSR): women less often meet anatomic criteria for EVAR, making OSR a more appropriate, albeit burdensome option. We adopted a fast-track (FT) protocol, comprising 19 evidence-based recovery enhancing interventions, which allowed for a reduction of complication rates, shortened hospital stay, sped up the return of bowel function and mobilization, and improved pain control. Comprehensive Aortic Training Course Using Cadaveric Pulsatile Flow Models to Improve Open and Endovascular Skills Throughout the Entire Spectrum of RAAA Management
The nationwide decline in the incidence of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA) and open aortic aneurysm repair threatens with decreasing trainee experience across the US, which needs to be addressed. Due to the emergency nature of RAAAs, teaching is less emphasized during these cases. Consequently, it is imperative to provide a dedicated environment to educate trainees in a safe and stress-free manner. To improve the skillset and experience of vascular trainees in the management of RAAA we created a comprehensive RAAA training course which provides an opportunity to practice the entire spectrum of RAAA management in ...

Access-Related Outcomes for EVAR
Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) is the first-line treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in fit patients. Percutaneous vascular access (pEVAR) allows to decrease the invasiveness of EVAR in comparison to surgical femoral cutdown (sEVAR). The aim of this study was to compare the two access techniques and their impact on operative time, hospitalization, short- and long-term complications, and mortality.
