AAA in Women: A Fast-track Protocol to Enhance Open Aortic Repair
Women experience higher mortality and complication rates than men after elective treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Moreover, the results disfavor the endovascular approach (EVAR) as compared to open surgical repair (OSR): women less often meet anatomic criteria for EVAR, making OSR a more appropriate, albeit burdensome option. We adopted a fast-track (FT) protocol, comprising 19 evidence-based recovery enhancing interventions, which allowed for a reduction of complication rates, shortened hospital stay, sped up the return of bowel function and mobilization, and improved pain control.
