Antiviral treatment standards for hepatitis B: An urgent need for expansion
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Jan 28;30(4):418-420. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i4.418.ABSTRACTThe present letter to the editor is related to the review with the title "Past, present, and future of long-term treatment for hepatitis B virus." Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) represents an important and pressing public health concern. Timely identification and effective antiviral therapy hold the potential to reduce liver-related mortality attributable to chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) substantially. However, the current global treatment rates for CHB remain conspicuously low, with the excessively stringent treatment criteri...

Effect of varicella ‐zoster virus infection and antiviral treatment on the risk for dementia: A meta‐analysis of observational studies
ConclusionThe association between VZV infection and dementia may be masked by antiviral treatment. Further studies with longer follow-up times that consider the severity of VZV infection and antiviral treatment are needed to clarify the contribution of VZV infection to the risk for dementia. Antiviral responses versus virus-induced cellular shutoff: a game of thrones between influenza A virus NS1 and SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1
Following virus recognition of host cell receptors and viral particle/genome internalization, viruses replicate in the host via hijacking essential host cell machinery components to evade the provoked antiviral innate immunity against the invading pathogen. Respiratory viral infections are usually acute with the ability to activate pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) in/on host cells, resulting in the production and release of interferons (IFNs), proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) to reduce virus fitness and mitigate infection. Nevertheless, the game between viruses and the host is a co...

Outcomes of Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant Recipients with HHV-6 Reactivation Receiving Antiviral Therapy
Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) frequently reactivates following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (alloHCT) with spontaneous resolution in most patients. HHV-6 related encephalitis may occur; however, other clinical syndromes are less well defined. Previous antiviral pre-emptive and prophylactic studies have not demonstrated clinical efficacy in preventing HHV-6 related encephalitis or improving transplant related outcomes and is not routinely recommended by clinical guidelines. Less is known about the clinical impact of HHV-6 reactivation and antiviral treatment following haploidentical alloHCT. (Source: Biology ...

Clinical Response to Virus-Specific T-Cells Is Not Impacted By T-Cell Co-Stimulation Inhibition
Patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) are at increased risk of viral infections. Virus-specific T cells (VSTs) have been successfully used in the treatment of viral infections that are unresponsive to antiviral therapy. Abatacept is used in the prevention of graft-vs-host disease (GVHD). Abatacept inhibits T cell activation, decreases T cell proliferation, survival and cytokine secretion in vivo. The impact of abatacept on VST outcomes has not been previously studied. (Source: Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation)
