Delayed acyclovir therapy for disseminated varicella zoster in an adult kidney transplant recipient: a case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: We experienced a successful ACV treatment for delayed and severe VZV infection with a literature review of VZV pneumonitis among kidney transplant recipients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case that presented a disseminated skin form with pneumonitis of VZV from Syria. This case supports the initiation of antiviral therapy for transplant patients even after 72 hours the onset of the rash despite the lack of evidence in these circumstances.PMID:36923769 | PMC:PMC10010797 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000000231 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Antiviral therapy defiant mixed viral retinitis post hematopoietic allogeneic stem cell transplant
We report a rare case of mixed viral retinitis occurring despite multiple antiviral prophylaxes including letermovir and with PCR-documented absence of preceding CMV viremia, in a post-allogeneic stem cell transplant patient, with PCR of the aqueous fluid demonstrating two viral populations. With very little existing literature on either mixed viral retinitis or CMV retinitis during letermovir prophylaxis, this case expands the literature on both topics. CMV retinitis is an uncommon potentially vision threatening presentation post hematopoietic stem cell transplant, and can occur due to early CMV reactivation, low CD4 coun...

High-risk population of progressive hepatic fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B patients on antiviral therapy
ConclusionsHBeAg-positive patients with a low HBcrAg level or old age, and HBeAg-negative patients with HBV genotype C tended to develop progressive hepatic fibrosis and had a high incidence of HCC and decompensated cirrhosis, even on ETV treatment. (Source: Journal of Gastroenterology)

First-line management of necrotizing herpetic retinitis by prioritizing the investigation of immune status and prognostic factors for poor visual outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: The visual prognosis of patients with NHR remains poor. Prompt investigation of immune status and presence of factors justifying intravitreal antiviral injections must be prioritized to initiate and adapt management while awaiting causative virus confirmation.PMID:36920634 | DOI:10.1007/s10792-023-02656-8 (Source: Herpes)

Pseudotyped Virus for Bandavirus
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2023;1407:265-277. doi: 10.1007/978-981-99-0113-5_14.ABSTRACTThe genus Bandavirus, belonging to family Phenuiviridae, order Bunyavirales, consists of eight tick-borne bunyaviruses. The Dabie bandavirus, formerly known as severe fever with thrombocytopenia virus (SFTSV), belongs to the genus Bandavirus. This emerging pathogen was first identified in central China in 2009. In recent years, the disease has been reported to cause several outbreaks in eastern Asia areas, including China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Tick-to-human transmission is the main route of infection in humans, and transmission via the con...

New insights into hepatitis B virus lymphotropism: Implications for HBV-related lymphomagenesis
HBV is one of the most widespread hepatitis viruses worldwide, and a correlation between chronic infection and liver cancer has been clearly reported. The carcinogenic capacity of HBV has been reported for other solid tumors, but the largest number of studies focus on its possible lymphomagenic role. To update the correlation between HBV infection and the occurrence of lymphatic or hematologic malignancies, the most recent evidence from epidemiological and in vitro studies has been reported. In the context of hematological malignancies, the strongest epidemiological correlations are with the emergence of lymphomas, in part...

Herpes Simplex Virus Pseudotumor Masking as Gastric Malignancy
ACG Case Rep J. 2023 Mar 8;10(3):e00985. doi: 10.14309/crj.0000000000000985. eCollection 2023 Mar.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus (HSV) pseudotumor is a rare presentation of HSV and has not been previously reported in the stomach. A 51-year-old man with a medical history of HIV presented with new-onset dysphagia. Endoscopy revealed an HSV-positive mass at the gastroesophageal junction. After antiviral treatment, the patient returned with a 100-pound unintentional weight loss. Computed tomography showed an infiltrative mass with enlarged lymph nodes. The mass had progressed despite HSV treatment, and a repeat set of biopsies w...

Distribution of HCV genotypes and HCV RNA viral load in hepatitis infected patients of Kolar region, Karnataka, India
Bioinformation. 2022 Apr 30;18(4):387-391. doi: 10.6026/97320630018387. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTDecisions and disease progression prediction, understanding the distribution of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype and its association with viral load is significant for treatment. Therefore, it is of interest to document the distribution pattern of HCV genotypes and their association with viral load among HCV infected patients in Kolar, Karnataka. Seventy-four HCV-positive patients and not on antiviral therapy were enrolled from R.L. Jalappa hospital in Kolar, Karnataka. Blood samples were taken and demographics were recorde...
