Anthropogenic contamination sources drive differences in antimicrobial-resistant < em > Escherichia coli < /em > in three urban lakes
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2024 Feb 13:e0180923. doi: 10.1128/aem.01809-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an ever-present threat to the treatment of infectious diseases. However, the potential relevance of this phenomenon in environmental reservoirs still raises many questions. Detection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the environment is a critical aspect for understanding the prevalence of resistance outside of clinical settings, as detection in the environment indicates that resistance is likely already widespread. We isolated antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli from three urban...

Quality Assessment of Selected Essential Antimicrobial Drugs from Drug Retail Outlets of Selected Cities in Eastern Ethiopia
The objective of this study was to assess the quality of four commonly used antimicrobials marketed in the cities of Dire Dawa and Jijiga and the town of Togo-Wuchale, which have high potential for illegal drug trade activities in Ethiopia because they are located near the border with Somalia. A total of 54 brands/samples of amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin formulations were collected covertly from 43 facilities using a convenience sampling strategy from March 16 to March 29, 2022. The samples were first screened using Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF)-Minilab protocols and then analy...

Clavulanic acid sensitization seems more involved in cutaneous than systemic reactions in amoxicilline-clavulanate drug reactions
Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol. 2024 Feb 13. doi: 10.23822/EurAnnACI.1764-1489.329. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBLs allergy is considered a major health issue, as BLs are the most frequently involved in drug allergic reactions. Amoxicillin (AX) is the most frequently involved drug in sensitization among all BLs. AX is commercialized alone or combined to clavulanic acid (CLA) in order to increase the antibiotic spectrum. The growing prescriptions of AX-CLA formulations contributed to increase the role of CLA as an allergy inducer. At present, little is known about the clinical characteristics of hypersensitivity reactions t...

Genomic epidemiology of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant < em > Escherichia coli < /em > from Argentinian pig and dairy farms reveals animal-specific patterns of co-resistance and resistance mechanisms
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2024 Feb 9:e0179123. doi: 10.1128/aem.01791-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTControl measures are being introduced globally to reduce the prevalence of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in bacteria on farms. However, little is known about the current prevalence and molecular ecology of ABR in bacterial species with the potential to be key opportunistic human pathogens, such as Escherichia coli, on South American farms. Working with 30 dairy cattle farms and 40 pig farms across two provinces in central-eastern Argentina, we report a comprehensive genomic analysis of third-generation cephalosporin-resistan...

Carbapenem-producing Enterobacteriaceae in mothers and newborns in southeast Gabon, 2022
This study, conducted at Franceville hospital's maternity and neonatology wards from February 22nd to June 20th, 2022, investigated the prevalence of CPE in 197 parturients and 203 newborns. Rectal swabs were taken from parturients before delivery and from newborns 30 minutes after birth. Blood culture samples were collected if signs of infection were observed in newborns during a 28-day follow-up. A total of 152 environmental samples were obtained, comprising 18 from sinks, 14 from incubators, 27 from cradles, 39 from maternal beds, 14 from tables and desks, four from the two baby scales and 36 from bedside furniture.Resu...
