Anaerobic antibiotic coverage in aspiration pneumonia and the associated benefits and harms: A retrospective cohort study
Chest. 2024 Feb 20:S0012-3692(24)00260-5. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2024.02.025. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Antibiotics with extended anaerobic coverage are commonly used to treat aspiration pneumonia, which is not recommended by current guidelines.RESEARCH QUESTION: In patients admitted to hospital for community-acquired aspiration pneumonia, is there a difference between antibiotic therapy with limited anaerobic coverage (LAC) versus antibiotic therapy with extended anaerobic coverage (EAC) in terms of in-hospital mortality and risk of Clostridioides difficile colitis?METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrosp...

Biotic pathways of reciprocal responses between antibiotic resistance genes and inorganic nitrogen cycling genes in amoxicillin-stressed compost ecosystems
This study explored the transformation of inorganic nitrogen, the expression levels of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and the regulatory mechanisms of key species on ARGs and inorganic nitrogen cycling genes (INCGs) under different levels of amoxicillin (AMX) stress. High level of AMX inhibited the accumulation of NH4+-N, which increased by 531 % relative to the initial. Moreover, AMX to some extent increased the levels of nirS and nirK, which could potentially result in nitrogen loss and the accumulation of NO2-. Actinobacteria might serve as potential hosts for ARGs during sludge composting. This stress induced a co...

Hound: a novel tool for automated mapping of genotype to phenotype in bacterial genomes assembled de novo
Brief Bioinform. 2024 Jan 22;25(2):bbae057. doi: 10.1093/bib/bbae057.ABSTRACTIncreasing evidence suggests that microbial species have a strong within species genetic heterogeneity. This can be problematic for the analysis of prokaryote genomes, which commonly relies on a reference genome to guide the assembly process. Differences between reference and sample genomes will therefore introduce errors in final assembly, jeopardizing the detection from structural variations to point mutations-critical for genomic surveillance of antibiotic resistance. Here we present Hound, a pipeline that integrates publicly available tools to...

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characterization of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Clinical Isolates of < em > Escherichia coli < /em > and < em > Klebsiella pneumoniae < /em > in Two Kenyan Facilities: A National Referral and a Level Five Hospital
CONCLUSIONS: The high proportion of ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates increases the utilization of last-resort antibiotics, jeopardizing antimicrobial chemotherapy. Furthermore, the antimicrobial resistance patterns exhibited towards extended-spectrum cephalosporins, beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations, fluoroquinolones, and macrolides show the risk of co-resistance associated with ESBL-producing isolates responsible for MDR. Hence, there is a need for regular surveillance and implementation of infection prevention and control strategies and antimicrobial stewardship programs.PMID:38384586 | P...

Case reports involving coinfection with < em > Avibacterium paragallinarum < /em > and < em > Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale < /em > in broiler chickens and < em > Avibacterium endocarditis < /em > in broiler breeding hens in Poland
Avian Pathol. 2024 Feb 22:1-33. doi: 10.1080/03079457.2024.2323029. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAbstractThe study describes three clinical cases of infection with Avibacterium spp.. In case no. 1, respiratory clinical signs and high mortality (0.7-4.2% daily; total 21.2%) in broiler chickens Ross 308 were shown to be caused by coinfection with sequence type 9 of O. rhinotracheale presumptive serotype A and A. paragallinarum presumptive serotype B. The identical PFGE restriction pattern (pulsotype) of seven A. paragallinarum isolates indicated that infectious coryza (IC) in broilers was caused by the same clone. In cases ...

Multiple Retained Needles in the Neck of a Drug User: A Case Report
We report the case of a 43-year-old male having a medical record of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C who presented to our department with a 3-day history of a febrile lateral neck swelling. He reported a history of repetitive intravenous drug use and previous abscesses that were surgically drained. We noted a left and tender 8 cm neck swelling with torticollis. Computed tomography scan showed a collected myositis of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in association to multiple metallic foreign bodies at the neck that were compatible with the aspect of broken needles. Imagery also showed a thrombosis of the ipsilate...

Tailoring magnetic Sn-MOFs for efficient amoxicillin antibiotic removal through process optimization
This study investigated the efficacy of magnetic Sn metal-organic frameworks (MSn-MOFs) in removing the insecticide amoxicillin (AMX) from aqueous solutions. Our thorough experimental investigation showed that MSn-MOFs were an incredibly effective adsorbent for removing AMX. Several methods were used to characterize the material. BET investigation of the data displayed a significant surface area of 880 m2 g-1 and a strong magnetic force of 89.26 emu g-1. To identify the point of zero charge, surface characterization was carried out and the value was 7.5. This shows that the adsorbent carries a positive and negative charge ...
