This is your brain on religion
A Providence TV news reporter tells us the sad story of health care workerswho are losing their jobs because they refuse the Covid-19 vaccine. I ' ll quote two of them." It goes against all of my religious beliefs to the core of my existence. " " I have not infected one patient that I know of. Who knows what [the vaccine] is going to do [to our bodies] years from now. I have my own God-given antibodies against this virus. " (She says she has been infected and recovered.)The first speaker is a phlebotomist. The second speaker is a registered nurse who works in a hospital. There is no major religious denomination -- Chr...

Chronic Kidney Disease and an Accelerated Aging of the Immune System
In conclusion, premature thymic involution and chronic inflammation greatly contribute to increased morbidity and mortality in CKD patients. Mechanisms are likely to be multiple and interlinked. Even when the quest to fountain of youth is a pipe dream, there are many scientific opportunities to prevent or to, at least in part, reverse CKD-related immune senescence. Further studies should precisely define most important pathways driving premature immune ageing in CKD patients and best therapeutic options to control them. (Source: Fight Aging!)

Burnout and bias? Or medical gaslighting? [PODCAST]
“Five years into my practice as an academic allergist/immunologist, my perceptions continue to evolve. Though once primarily informed by my mentors ’ wisdom, I continue incorporating my experiences as both physician and autoimmune patient to guide my practice. Though we all know medicine isn’t like it used to be, nostalgia is bittersweet. In its wake, theRead more …Burnout and bias? Or medical gaslighting? [PODCAST] originally appeared inKevinMD.com. In conclusion, inhibiting the lysosomal oxidation of LDL in atherosclerotic lesions by antioxidants targeted at lysosomes causes the regression of atherosclerosis and improves liver and muscle characteristics in mice and might be a promising novel therapy for atherosclerosis in patients. NANOG Expression versus Cellular Senescence https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2021/09/nanog-expression-versus-cellular-senescence/ Are there many strategies that can reverse cellular senescence? There are certainly strategies that can lower levels of cellular senescence over time, both in cell cultures and in living a...

Looking at the Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment on Aging: Revisiting a Problematic Study and Ridiculous Claims
The scientific community is very broad, and there are many groups within that community whose members intermittently produce studies that are either poorly designed, poorly conducted, or poorly presented and explained. Or all three, for all of the usual reasons. Constraints of time and funding, institutional pressure to publish, the involvement of external interests, and so forth. Bad papers do get published, provided that the authors are subtle enough. This does tend to be a self-correcting problem, when considered over a sufficiently long span of time to allow errant individuals and institutions to blacken their reputati...

Is There A Place For Facebook In Healthcare?
Data privacy scandals, help in rigging elections, spreading fake news on COVID and vaccines: Facebook has been through a lot and users are not happy with the social media giant’s performance. However, Mark Zuckerberg’s company does not only have a political and social impact, but it’s also getting quite relevant in healthcare. We looked around what Facebook currently does in healthcare and evaluated whether those are viable ways to follow in the future. Facebook: from trust issues to healthcare The social media machine built on “sophisticated, computer-driven engines for extracting users’ person...

Delta Double-Down: A Universal Health Plan Is Long Overdue.
By MIKE MAGEE On March 25, 1966, during the Poor People’s March that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” This week, my niece in Orlando, Florida, sent her 8-year old son, masked, back to public school. He has a history of severe allergies, including several anaphylactic episodes requiring emergency respiratory intervention. His class included a voluntary mix of masked and unmasked children. He now has a 105 degree fever and has tested positive for the Delta variant of Covid. His crisis, and those of countless othe...

A Reduced Memory B Cell Population in Older People Impairs Immune Response
The age-related decline of the immune system is complex. There are many facets to the issues of increased systemic inflammation and reduced immune competence. Here, researchers show that a necessary population of memory B cells is reduced with age, and this impairs the ability of the immune system to respond to novel threats. Clearing the entire B cell complement has been attempted in mice, and shown to improve function. B cells regenerate rapidly following clearance, even in old animals. It is as yet unknown as to how that approach interacts with the dysfunction described here, but B cell clearance does address the proble...

Sorry, I ’m fed up. It’s not professional, but I am.
“It’s experimental.” “It alters your DNA.” “It may cause long-term problems.” “It’s too new, too rushed. I want more time.” I hear this nonsense from patients all day. None are docs, virologists, microbiologists, immunologists, public health officials, medical researchers, nor in tensive care docs. COVID can kill them in a particularly unpleasant way; with 99 percent+Read more …Sorry, I ’m fed up. It’s not professional, but I am. originally appeared inKevinMD.com. Virtual native enhancement instead of late gadolinium enhancement
Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is considered the gold standard for non-invasive myocardial tissue characterization [1]. Artificial intelligence was used to develop a CMR virtual native enhancement (VNE) imaging which does not need an intravenous contrast as in LGE. VNE uses a deep learning model with multiple streams of convolutional neural networks to enhance existing signals of native T1 maps and cine imaging of cardiac structure and function to produce LGE equivalent images. T1 maps are pixel wise maps of tissue T1 relaxation times. The technology was developed in CMR ...
