The Side Effects of Lithium: My Love Affair with Water
I never go anywhere without a drink in my hand. My nosey neighbor had the nerve to ask me if I was an alcoholic. I’m not an alcoholic. I just love ice water, huge, plastic glasses of ice water. The lithium did that to me. Lithium carbonate, which used to be a medication of choice for bipolar individuals, is a salt. It makes you ridiculously thirsty. For over 15 years, I ingested a lot of it daily. The result was a constant, unquenchable thirst. I don’t physically need water anymore, but I’m kind of addicted to it psychologically. Funny, I don’t want juice or coffee or pop. I want water. This drinking activity will ...

Mr. and Mrs. Wheat Belly
Men and women follow the Wheat Belly lifestyle and can undergo important and sometime startling hormonal changes. Though results vary with stage of life—young adults, middle-aged, older—there are a variety of hormonal changes that women and men typically experience, some in concert, others independently. Such hormonal shifts can be powerful and part of the health-restoring menu of changes that develop with this lifestyle. They can even improve a relationship in a number of ways, both physically and emotionally, especially if we weave in some of the newer Wheat Belly/Undoctored concepts and practices such as oxy...

Knitted Fabric Delivers Laser Light to Treat Skin Conditions
A number of diseases are treated using light therapy. These include acne, actinic keratosis, jaundice, Paget’s disease, and psoriasis. Modern light blankets use arrays of LEDs to produce illumination, but light emitted by LEDs can be quite weak compared to light produced by a laser. Photodynamic therapy light lamps, on the other hand, can create painful therapy sessions because of their indiscriminate and intense light. Texinov Medical Textiles, a company based outside of Lyon, France, with help from the European health consortium PHOS-ISTOS, has announced developing a knitted soft fabric called FLUXMEDICARE that ...

MKSAP: 32-year-old man with a rash on his face and midchest
Test your medicine knowledge with the MKSAP challenge, in partnership with the American College of Physicians. A 32-year-old man is evaluated for a 2-week history of a rash on his face and midchest. He describes the rash as consisting of small, reddish “lumps” that are intensely itchy; they develop and begin to resolve with development of new lesions. He otherwise feels well. Medical history is significant for a recent diagnosis of HIV infection. Medications are tenofovir, emtricitabine, efavirenz, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. A Living History – Eleonore of Bavaria
She was silver-haired and weepy-eyed, with bluish gray bags under he lower-eyelids. Her grandson sat staring at his ipad. He looked like an Irish bartender–with a red beard and a toothy smile. He was patient and spent over five-hours at her bedside, with nowhere specific to go. She spoke perfect english with a slight european accent, but the more I listened the more familiar it sounded. Taking her full history, I asked extra questions as an excuse to listen to the pleasant sing-song voice. She stressed and drew out her ‘S’ sounds with a soothing tone that reminded me of the Kaa, the crafty, sly snake fro...

YoDerm Provides Consultations and Prescriptions Within 24 Hours
In many areas the wait time to see a dermatologist can span weeks or even months, leaving those with acute or chronic skin conditions frustrated. YoDerm is trying to change that. For a fee of $59, patients can submit skin problems and upload photos through an online platform, receive a consultation from a board-certified dermatologist, and have a prescription sent to their local pharmacy – in less than 24 hours. The idea for YoDerm stemmed from co-founder and CEO Ben Holber’s personal experiences. Growing up, he had chronic acne and was unhappy with the “pretty traditional experience” of scheduling difficulties...
