Buckeye Eviscerated on KevinMD
The medical social media Godfather Kevin Pho will occasionally cross post some of my work on his hugely popular and successful blog KevinMD.  Earlier this week he chose to include my relatively recent post on an article I had read in the Economist last fall about physician assisted suicide (PAS).  I was in one of those moods when I wrote it.  I suppose I was looking to achieve a certain degree of shock value by writing it as a straight satire of what it could mean to be an actual doctor who participated in PAS.  I mused about how a general surgeon might get involv...

Physicians who hasten death should not be called doctors
From the Economist in October 2012 was an article on physician assisted suicide.  In the United States, terminally ill patients can apply for permission to end their lives with the guidance of a doctor in Oregon and Washington state.  Several safeguards are in place to prevent this from becoming the default death pathway (only 0.2% of total Oregonian deaths).  Also, I had no idea that Holland, Switzerland, and Belgium allow assisted suicide even in non-terminally ill citizens.  So you can be suffering from, say, severe acne vulgaris, in the Netherlands and be within your rights to seek immediate death from a cert...

Is ProActiv a Rip Off?
One of the writers for The Beauty Brains was interviewed for a recent article in Slate magazine. The topic was the ProActiv skin care line. Is ProActiv worth the bother? The title of the article is Don’t Bother with ProActiv and it was inspired by a story on Jezebel.com about people who felt they were getting ripped off by ProActiv’s subscription purchasing model. The question to us was “is better than anything else on the market for clearing up acne?” Basically, ProActiv uses the same over-the-counter drug technology that is available to any company selling acne products.  Because these drugs are ...

5 Foods That Actually Make You Glow
We are what we eat, and that means that the foods we eat dictate our health. When people start to monitor their diet, they concern themselves with body fat and muscle building. But if you also spend some time focusing on the right foods to eat for healthy skin, then you can look younger and feel better. Avocado Image via Flickr by ollesvensson Many people are familiar with the long list of health benefits that avocados offer, but not enough people are familiar with how good the avocado can be for your skin. This is a fruit loaded with vitamins C and E, both of which are universally recognized as being very good for your...

Celiac is not a disease
. Lest you think I’ve gone off my rocker, let me explain. Say that, of 100 people you know who smoke, only 1 gets lung cancer. Do we declare that the only person who has problems with cigarettes is the poor unfortunate guy or girl with the one lung cancer? Shall we ignore the 60 cases of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the 10 abdominal aortic aneurysms, the 5 thoracic aortic and iliofemoral aneurysms, the oral, tongue, and laryngeal cancers, and the several dozen other conditions that typically develop in smokers–but not as imminently fatal as lung cancer? In other words, do we dismiss all these conditions ...
