Does the bird poop facial really work?
MG must know…A couple of years ago I heard a lot of buzz about the Geisha Facial that uses bird poo to improve your complexion. What’s the science behind this? We know that a lot of beauty claims are bullish*t, but this one is literally birdsh*t! Nonetheless, that hasn’t stopped modern spas from adopting this ancient Japanese tradition. Shizuka New York, for example, charges you $180 for the privilege of having bird poop rubbed on your face. Supposedly, the poo brightens skin and evens out your complexion. Does it really work? Here’s the scientific scoop on bird poop. How a bird poop facial is made First, you get s...

ScanZ Mobile Acne Scanner Helps Teens Track Zits (VIDEO)
mySkin, a Jersey City, NJ firm, is developing the ScanZ skin imaging device that connects to a smartphone to help people track their acne. The company unveiled the product at TechCrunch Disrupt last week and is launching an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for further product development. ScanZ is patented device that projects light of different wavelengths onto the skin and captures images of the acne. The collected data is then sent to a smartphone app that uses image processing algorithms to analyze the zits. After scanning a zit on the user’s skin, the app asks the user a set of questions regarding the user̵...

FDA To Study Prescription Drug Advertising Aimed At Teenagers
Teenagers are, by and large, a vulnerable group that is also exposed regularly to prescription drug advertising. But how do they perceive the messages for medicines, especially those that treat afflictions common to that time of life? And to what extent are they able to sift through the information and assess the risks and benefits? In hopes of assessing teenage reactions to such situations, the FDA plans to run a randomized, controlled study by showing Internet- based promotional campaigns for fake medicines for acne and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in order to compare their perceptions of the messages with yo...

Top 10 things you should know about cosmetic science
This article on cosmetic science is primarily intended to benefit anyone interested in chemist careers but hopefully the Beauty Brains community will find this information useful as well! Surfactants It is amazing how little time is devoted to surfactants in college when you consider the importance they play in so many industries. What are they? Surfactant is a shorter way to say “surface active agent”. These are molecules that have the property of reducing surface tension, thereby allowing oil and water to form stable (temporarily) mixtures. Examples – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Disteara...

Reader Question: How Can I Fix My Bacne ASAP So I Can Rock an Open-Back Dress?
We've had a thing for open-back dresses since the summer -- it's the perfect way to show a little skin without going OTT.  Check Lily Collins at this year's Oscars: Is she not the definition of impossibly chic and slightly sexy?!? But you don't need a famous fam to rock the look; I wore one to a rehearsal dinner the other week. And when I did, a girlfriend was all like, "OMG, I love your dress, but I have such bad bacne. How can I fix it before holiday party season?" And I was all like, girl, I have totally got you. (Source: The ND Blog: Notes from the Nutritionista by Monica Reinagel, L.D.N., C.N.S.)

What does “external use” mean for cosmetics?
Wade wonders… So I have started to use Nivea Creme on all parts of my body, including my lips. The tin says that the cream is “for external use only.” I would like to know the definition of: “for external use only,” specifically as it relates to the cosmetic world. The Beauty Brains respond: By definition all cosmetics are for external use only. To refresh your mind here is the legal definition of a cosmetic: “The FD&C Act defines cosmetics as articles intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without ...

bangers and mash
The one thing I didn’t expect about going part-time was how much it was going to enhance how much I enjoy my career. Don’t get me wrong, it's still a stressful job, but not having to do it all the time does change the experience significantly. Now that I have regular days away from the hospital (and just as an aside on other thing that I’m learning is how short the day is between school dropoff and pickup—it seems on paper like you should have all day to do things but in all honesty we drop off, I take the baby to the playground for an hour or two, come home, put her down for nap, clean up, give her lunch, cle...

Trip Rapid Reviews - systematic reviews in five minutes
Wow, a systematic review in five minutes, surely not.Well, behind the hyperbole, we're not actually claiming that.  What we're saying is that we've created a system to rapidly 'examine' multiple controlled trials and to attempt to approximate the effectiveness of an intervention. So, how does it work?  It's surprisingly straightforward:You press the 'Trip Rapid Review' button and two search boxes appear, one is for the population (e.g. diabetes, acne) and the other is for the intervention (e.g. metformin, diet).  You enter the appropriate terms and press search. NOTE: The current system is optimised for place...

Undisclosed Conflicts: A Blemish On Acne Treatment Guidelines?
What should one make of this? A prominent medical society issues guidelines for a common affliction and most of the authors were paid consultants or speakers for the companies that sell the drugs used to treat the problem. And the organization that developed the guidelines – and paid the society to publish them as a supplement in its medical journal – received nearly all of its income from the same drugmakers. These are the circumstances surrounding the appearance last May of the guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics to treat childhood acne. Of the 15 experts who penned the guidelines, 13 had finan...

Angela S.
Angela, a patient of mine, wrote in with the story of her path to a gluten-free lifestyle. The journey she undertook, and how radically her life changed as a result, is proof-positive of the overwhelming health benefits of a gluten-free diet. -Dr. Perlmutter For over the last 10-11 years I have spent a great deal of time in and out of doctor’s offices, trying to figure out why I was having so many health issues. At 16, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), at 21 I was found to have severe candidiasis, at 22 I had to have my tonsils out, 23 I had an emergency appendectomy, and most recently I had a 10...

Labor Day and Cosmetic Scientists
In honor of Labor Day we’re re-running one of our holiday posts for our American (and Canadian) readers. As you may recall, Labor Day originated in 1882 as “a day off for the working citizens.” But have you ever stopped to think how many “working scientists” are involved making the brand name cosmetics you use every day? From Almay and American Crew, to the Body Shop and Burts Bees; to Clinique and Clearasil, to Dove and Dr. Scholls, there are thousands of chemists, biologists, and engineers who work behind the scenes to make the makeup and other products you use daily. Here are some examples:...

Ultra-rapid reviews, first test results
In conclusion, this is early days and our first testing steps.  The results have been very encouraging and when our new system is out it'll be even better.  But much more testing is required!Oh yes, the time taken - if you're interested, then scroll down. With the exception of the second to last result they all took around 2-3 minutes.  The second to last one took approximately 5 minutes (as I had to scroll through around 55 results to select the 17 that we used).  (Source: Liberating the literature)
