Dissecting exosome inhibitors: therapeutic insights into small-molecule chemicals against cancer
Experimental & Molecular Medicine, Published online: 29 November 2022; doi:10.1038/s12276-022-00898-7Understanding how cells produce and release exosomes, nano-sized membrane-bound vesicles containing biological molecules, holds promise for developing new cancer therapies. Tumors release exosomes that remodel the nearby environment to promote cancer growth, suppress the immune response and induce drug resistance. Although some aspects of exosomes have been studied, little attention has been paid to exosome inhibitors and how they work. Moon-Chang Baek at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea, and co-worke...

Antimicrobial resistance and genomic characterization of Salmonella enterica serovar Senftenberg isolates in production animals from the United States
This study provided antimicrobial susceptibility and genomic characteristics of S. Senftenberg clinical isolates from production animals in the USA during 2014 to 2017. This study will serve as a base for future studies focused on the phenotypic and molecular antimicrobial characterization of S. Senftenberg isolates in animals. Monitoring of antimicrobial resistance to detect emergence of multidrug-resistant strains is critical. (Source: Frontiers in Microbiology)

Antimicrobial resistance and genomic characterization of Escherichia coli from pigs and chickens in Zhejiang, China
Escherichia coli is considered an opportunistic pathogen and an indicator for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring. Despite many reports on its AMR monitoring, studies based on genome-based analysis of AMR genes are still insufficient. Here, 181 E. coli strains were isolated from anal swab samples collected from pigs and chickens of animal farms located in Eastern China and sequenced through the Illumina platform. The results showed that 87.85% (159/181) of the E. coli isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR). Ampicillin (AMP)- spectinomycin (SPT)- tetracycline (TET)- florfenicol (FFC)- sulfisoxazole (SF)- trimethoprim...

Assessment of porphyrogenicity of drugs and chemicals in selected hepatic cell culture models through a fluorescence ‐based screening assay
Effects of selected chemical agents on accumulation of porphyrins in LMH cells. AbstractCompounds that induce 5-aminolevulinic acid [ALA] synthase-1 and/or cytochromes P-450 may induce acute porphyric attacks in patients with the acute hepatic porphyrias [AHPs]. Currently, there is no simple, robust model used to assess and predict the porphyrogenicity of drugs and chemicals. Our aim was to develop a fluorescence-based in vitro assay for this purpose. We studied four different hepatic cell culture models: HepG2 cells, LMH cells, 3D HepG2 organoids, and 3D organoids of primary liver cells from people without known disease [...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 2033: Electrochemical Analysis of Sulfisoxazole Using Glassy Carbon Electrode (GCE) and MWCNTs/Rare Earth Oxide (CeO2 and Yb2O3) Modified-GCE Sensors
salah In this work, new electrochemical sensors based on the modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-rare metal oxides (REMO) nanocomposites were fabricated by drop-to-drop method of MWCNTs-REMO dispersion in ethanol. REMO nanoparticles were synthesized by precipitation followed by hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C in absence and presence of TritonTM X-100 surfactant. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis using MWCNTs-CeO2@GCE and MWCNTs-Yb2O3@GCE sensors were used for the analysis of sulfisoxazole (SFX) drug in water samples. The results of CV analysis showed that...

Synthesis of Ag/BiOBr/CeO < sub > 2 < /sub > composites with enhanced photocatalytic degradation for sulfisoxazole
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2022 Feb 15. doi: 10.1007/s11356-021-17669-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel Ag/BiOBr/CeO2 composite was successfully prepared for the first time, which had excellent performance in degrading sulfisoxazole (SSX) under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-vis DRS and BET et al. The composite of 10% Ag/BiOBr/CeO2 showed the best photocatalytic activity and more than 99.5% SSX can be removed within 20 min. It exhibited the highest k value of 0.2428 min-1, which was about 39.7 times higher than pure BiOBr (6.11 × 10-3 min-1) and 22.1 times hig...

Evidence of sheep and abattoir environment as important reservoirs of multidrug resistant Salmonella and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli
In conclusion, our study reaffirms that sheep and their abattoir environment act as important reservoirs of AMR ESBL E. coli and MDR Salmonella in the U.S. Further studies are required to determine associated public health risks.PMID:34990883 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2021.109516 (Source: International Journal of Food Microbiology)

Prevalence, serovar distribution, and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella spp. isolated from pork in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis
This study aimed to summarize the epidemiological characteristics of Salmonella spp. isolated from pork, including its prevalence, serovar distribution, and antibiotic resistance rate. We systematically reviewed published studies on Salmonella spp. isolated from pork in China between 2000 and 2020 in two Chinese and three English databases and quantitatively summarized its prevalence, serovar distribution, and antibiotic resistance using meta-analysis methods. Furthermore, we conducted subgroup analysis and meta-regression to explore the source of the heterogeneity from historical changes and regional difference perspectiv...

Nontyphoidal < em > Salmonella < /em > and Their Antimicrobial Susceptibility among Diarrheic Patients Attending Private Hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
In conclusion, the current study showed low prevalence of NTS in diarrheic patients attending private hospitals in Addis Ababa. Although multidrug resistance to several antimicrobials was not detected in the isolates, prudent use of antimicrobials is recommended to guaranty the long-term use of the available antimicrobials.PMID:34589548 | PMC:PMC8476251 | DOI:10.1155/2021/6177741 (Source: Biomed Res)

Comparison of Antimicrobial Resistance, Virulence Genes, Phylogroups, and Biofilm Formation of Escherichia coli Isolated From Intensive Farming and Free-Range Sheep
Pathogenic E. coli are among the most frequently isolated bacterial pathogens on large-scale sheep farms in China. Antibiotic use in wool sheep production is a risk factor for promoting the emergence of resistant E. coli. To reveal the differences of E. coli populations in sheep from different farming systems the antimicrobial resistance, virulence genes, biofilm formation, and phylogroups of 500 E. coli isolates obtained between September 2019 and December 2020 in northwest China from diarrheic infections of intensive farming and free-range sheep were analyzed. The antimicrobial susceptibility test for 12 classes of antim...
