Antimicrobial resistance in generic < em > E. coli < /em > isolated from western Canadian cow-calf herds
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Most generic E. coli isolates were pansusceptible. The observed resistance patterns were consistent with earlier studies of AMR from commensal E. coli in this region. Baseline AMR data for cow-calf herds are not currently collected as part of routine surveillance, but are essential to inform antimicrobial use policy and stewardship.PMID:38304484 | PMC:PMC10783568 (Source: The Canadian Veterinary Journal)

Application of UHPLC-MS/MS method to monitor the occurrence of sulfonamides and their transformation products in soil in Silesia, Poland
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Oct 16. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-30146-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSulfonamides circulating in the environment lead to disturbances in food chains and local ecosystems, but most importantly contribute to development of resistance genes, which generate problems with multidrug-resistant bacterial infections treatment. In urban areas, sources of sulfonamide distribution in soils have received comparatively less attention in contrast to rural regions, where animal-derived manure, used as a natural fertilizer, is considered the main source. The aim of this study was to determine eight sulfon...

Self-assembly construction of 1D carbon nitride nanotubes and cobalt-modified for superior photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 26:140299. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140299. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the present work, a cobalt-doped carbon nitride nanotubes (Co-CNt) was synthesized via self-assembly process. Contributed to the narrow band gap, enlarged specific surface area and abundant active sites, Co-CNt has excellent photoelectric properties and superior performance than pristine CN in sulfisoxazole (SIZ) degradation under blue light irradiation, which achieved 100% removal within 40 min. Meanwhile, the system not only exhibited practical applicability by efficiently degrading SIZ, but also generating high leve...

Sulfonamides (SAs) exposure causes neurobehavioral toxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations (ERCs) in early development of zebrafish
In this study, we assessed the neurotoxicity of six SAs including the sulfadiazine (SD), sulfathiazole (ST), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfisoxazole (SIZ), sulfapyridine (SPD), and sulfadimethoxine (SDM) by exposing zebrafish to environmentally relevant concentrations (ERCs). The SAs exhibited concentration-dependent effects on zebrafish behavior, including spontaneous movement, heartbeat, survival rate, and body metrics, ultimately leading to depressive-like symptoms and sublethal toxicity during early life stages. Notably, even the lowest SA concentration (0.05 μg/L) induced neurotoxicity and behavioral impairment in zebr...

Antimicrobial resistance and genomic characterization of Salmonella enterica isolates from chicken meat
This study investigated genotypic and phenotypic antimicrobial resistance profiles, phylogenic relatedness, plasmid and virulence composition of 39 Salmonella enterica strains isolated from chicken meat samples using whole genome sequencing (WGS) technology. Four distinct serotypes were identified; Salmonella Minnesota (16/39, 41%), Salmonella Infantis (13/39, 33.3%), Salmonella Enteritidis (9/39, 23.1%), and one isolate was detected for Salmonella Kentucky (1/39, 2.6%), with sequence types (STs) as followed: ST548, ST32, ST11, and ST198, respectively. Phenotypic resistance to tetracycline (91.2%), ampicillin (82.4%), sulf...

Structure of a novel Co-based heterogeneous catalyst via Mn < sub > 3 < /sub > (PO < sub > 4 < /sub > ) < sub > 2 < /sub > with as a carrier to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for improving degradation of sulfonamides
In this study, Mn3(PO4)2 was used as a carrier to fabricate a novel and high-efficient catalyst with Co3O4 anchored (Co3O4@Mn3(PO4)2) for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade SAs. Surprisingly, the catalyst exhibited superior performance, and nearly 100% of SAs (10 mg L-1) including sulfamethazine (SMZ), sulfadimethoxine (SDM), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and sulfisoxazole (SIZ) was degraded by Co3O4@Mn3(PO4)2-activated PMS within 10 min. A series of characterization of the Co3O4@Mn3(PO4)2 composite were conducted and the main operational parameters of SMZ degradation were investigated. SO4•-, •OH, and 1O2 ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1541: Effective Removal of Sulfonamides Using Recyclable MXene-Decorated Bismuth Ferrite Nanocomposites Prepared via Hydrothermal Method
gdeng Qiu Developing a simple and efficient method for removing organic micropollutants from aqueous systems is crucial. The present study describes the preparation and application, for the first time, of novel MXene-decorated bismuth ferrite nanocomposites (BiFeO3/MXene) for the removal of six sulfonamides including sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), sulfamethazine (SMTZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMXZ) and sulfisoxazole (SXZ). The properties of BiFeO3/MXene are enhanced by the presence of BiFeO3 nanoparticles, which provide a large surface area to facilitate the removal of sulfonamides. More impor...
