Management of Keratoconus in Down Syndrome and Other Intellectual Disability

Conclusions: KC is strikingly prevalent in the ID population. Ireland has the highest rate of Down syndrome in Europe (26.3:10,000 live births). This group is rarely suitable for corneal transplantation, and corneal collagen crosslinking is an effective intervention to prevent progression to advanced KC in this already socially restricted group. We propose an algorithm for investigation/treatment and also recommend uniform pediatric KC screening/treatment in ID populations.
