Author's reply to Mediterranean Diet and wine intake could improve atrial function in patients with atrial fibrillation

We agree with Mattioli et al1 that the Mediterranean diet appears to be beneficial for primary and secondary prevention of rhythm disorders. Observational studies demonstrate a lower risk of incident AF and higher rates of spontaneous conversion to sinus rhythm2. Wine ‘in moderation’ is one of numerous components of this diet, which incorporates fruit, vegetables, moderate fish intake, olive oil and avoidance of saturated fat, processed dairy and meat.
