N, O ‐Doped Walnut‐Like Porous Carbon Composite Microspheres Loaded with Fe/Co Nanoparticles for Adjustable Electromagnetic Wave Absorption
This study addresses the challenge of designing simple and environmentally friendly methods for the preparation of effective electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials with tailored microstructures and multi-component regulation. N, O doped walnut-like porous carbon composite microspheres loaded with FeCo nanoparticles (WPCM/Fe-Co) are synthesized through high-temperature carbonization combined with soap-free emulsion polymerization and hydrothermal methods. AbstractThis study addresses the challenge of designing simple and environmentally friendly methods for the preparation of effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 320: Interactions between Damaged Hair Keratin and Juglone as a Possible Restoring Agent: A Vibrational and Scanning Electron Microscopy Study
icheletti Juglone, a quinonic compound present in walnut extracts, was proposed as a restoring agent for hair keratin treated with permanent or discoloration processes. The proposed mechanism of restoration by juglone involves the formation of a Michael adduct between the quinone and the thiol moieties of cysteine residues. To this purpose, the first part of the present paper involved the spectroscopic study of the product of the reaction between juglone and N-acetyl-L-cysteine as a model compound. IR spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) monitored the chemical and morphological variations induced by appl...

Peroxymonosulfate activation by walnut shell activated carbon supported nano zero-valent iron for the degradation of tetracycline: Performance, degradation pathway and mechanism
In this study, activated carbon (WS-AC) was prepared from walnut shell. Nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was loaded on walnut shell activated carbon by liquid phase reduction method and used as catalyst (WS-AC/nZVI) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to efficiently degrade tetracycline (TC) in solution. The composite material with a mass ratio of WS-AC to nZVI of 1:1 has the highest catalytic performance for activating PMS to degrade TC. The results showed that under the conditions of TC concentration of 100 ppm, PMS dosage of 0.2 mM and WS-AC/nZVI dosage of 0.1 g/L, the removal efficiency of TC could reach 81 %. Based on que...

Mixed nut consumption improves brain insulin sensitivity: a randomized, single-blinded, controlled, crossover trial in older adults with overweight or obesity
CONCLUSIONS: Longer-term mixed nut consumption affected insulin action in brain regions involved in the modulation of metabolic and cognitive processes in older adults with overweight/obesity. Intrahepatic lipid content and different cardiometabolic risk markers also improved, but peripheral insulin sensitivity was not affected.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04210869 (ClinicalTrials.gov).PMID:38128733 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.12.010 (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Early detection of acrolein precursors in vegetable oils by using proton transfer reaction - mass spectrometry
This study employs proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) to detect acrolein precursors in vegetable oils by focusing on the m/z (mass-to-charge ratio) 57. To this purpose, hempseed, sesame, walnut, olive and linseed oils were stored for 168 h at 60 °C in presence of 2,2'-azobis(2-metilpropionitrile) (3 mM) radicals initiator. The evolution of m/z 57 by PTR-MS was also compared with traditional lipid oxidation indicators such as peroxide value, conjugated diene, oxygen consumption and, isothermal calorimetry. The obtained results were explained by the fatty acid composition and antioxidant capacity of the oil...

Complicated atopic dermatitis in a healthy infant: Homemade walnut cream
Key Clinical MessageHealthcare providers should educate patients on the appropriate use of topical agents and the potential risks associated with non-standardized formulations, especially for infants and young children.AbstractComplementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is an unconventional treatment method used alongside or in addition to conventional medical treatment methods to improve the healing process. Inappropriate administration of CAM can worsen the condition of diseases and have potential hazards for patients. Herbal therapy is one of the most famous and widely used CAMs in treating various skin disorders. In t...
