Clinical Challenge in Urology: Correctly Managing Common Penile Lesions Goes a Long Way
A 26-year-old male from Venezuela comes to the urology clinic referred by his girlfriend's gynecologist. His girlfriend was diagnosed with HPV, and showed her doctor a photo of the patient ’s penis. The patient first noticed these lesions a few years ago, and since then, they have increased in number and size. He denies any pain or itching, and is otherwise asymptomatic. He has no other past medical history to report. He has had more than 10 sexual partners, and reports inconsistent use of condoms. (Source: Urology)

Parasitological and molecular characterization of Trypanosoma cruzi of triatomines and mammals from endemic areas for Chagas disease in Venezuela
This study demonstrates the presence of vectors and mammalian reservoirs naturally infected with T. cruzi in communities of Monagas, the 9th largest and 9th most populous state in Venezuela. This situation represents a neglected epidemiological problem demanding urgent attention and imperative health care intervention.PMID:38060033 | DOI:10.1007/s00436-023-08072-2 (Source: Biomed Res)

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2351: Defining the Cynomolgus Macaque (Macaca Fascicularis) Animal Model for Aerosolized Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis: Importance of Challenge Dose and Viral Subtype
mela J. Glass Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) outbreaks occur sporadically. Additionally, VEEV has a history of development as a biothreat agent. Yet, no FDA-approved vaccine or therapeutic exists for VEEV disease. The sporadic outbreaks present a challenge for testing medical countermeasures (MCMs) in humans; therefore, well-defined animal models are needed for FDA Animal Rule licensure. The cynomolgus macaque (CM) model has been studied extensively at high challenge doses of the VEEV Trinidad donkey strain (>1.0 × 108 plaque-forming units [PFU]), doses that are too high to be a re...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 5595: Cervical Cancer Stages, Human Papillomavirus Integration, and Malignant Genetic Mutations: Integrative Analysis of Datasets from Four Different Cohorts
d Muhie Cervical cancer represents a significant global health concern, stemming from persistent infections with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). The understanding of cervical cancer’s clinical correlates, risk factors, molecular mechanisms, stages, and associated genetic mutations is important for early detection and improved treatment strategies. Through integrated analysis of clinical and molecular datasets, this study aims to identify key factors that are overlapping and distinct across four cohorts of different races and regions. Here, datasets from four distinct cohorts of patients fro...

Migration Status and Utilization of Healthcare Services Among Venezuelan Immigrants in Peru
Conclusion: 58.1% of Venezuelan migrants in Peru did not seek medical attention despite having health problems. Having an illegal immigration status leads to a lower probability of using these services, especially in men. (Source: Journal of Community Health)

An Outbreak of Acute Chagas Disease Possibly Spread through Oral Transmission Involving Animal Reservoirs in Eastern Colombia
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Nov 13:tpmd230380. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0380. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChagas disease (CD) is a parasitic infection caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Reports of CD cases associated with oral transmission have increased, particularly in Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. In this investigation, parasitological, serological, and molecular tests were conducted on samples obtained from humans, mammal reservoirs, and hosts involved in the assessment of a suspected oral transmission outbreak in Cubara, Boyaca, Colombia. Seropositivity was observed in 60% (3 of 5) of index patients and 6.4% (5 o...
