South ‐to‐South parental migration patterns and excess weight among children: Insights from a national cross‐sectional study in Colombia
ConclusionColombian children with return migrant parents from Venezuela experienced less excess weight than children with non-migrant parents, but higher rates of food insecurity in migrant households might partially explain this difference. This study calls attention to two serious public health concerns for Colombian children —those who have excess weight and those who lack sufficient food, particularly among migrant returnees (a situation that may have worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic). Post-exposure intranasal IFN α suppresses replication and neuroinvasion of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus within olfactory sensory neurons
Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus (VEEV) may enter the central nervous system (CNS) within olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) that originate in the nasal cavity after intranasal exposure. While it is known that V... (Source: Journal of Neuroinflammation)

Access to HIV/STI testing among male and female Venezuelan migrants in Peru: evidence from a nationwide survey
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are major global public health issues. Migrants represent a vulnerable group that faces multiple barriers to access to he... (Source: BMC Public Health)

Understanding transmission risk and predicting environmental suitability for Mayaro Virus in Central and South America
The objective of this study was to clarify the geographic distribution of MAYV using an established risk mapping framework. This consisted of generating evidence consensus scores for MAYV presence, modeling the potential distribution of MAYV in select countries across Central and South America, and estimating the population residing in areas suitable for MAYV transmission. We compiled a georeferenced compendium of MAYV occurrence in humans, animals, and arthropods. Based on an established evidence consensus framework, we integrated multiple information sources to assess the total evidence supporting ongoing transmission of...

Vaccine-associated respiratory pathology correlates with viral clearance and protective immunity after immunization with self-amplifying RNA expressing the spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2 in mouse models
In this study, we evaluated the immunogenicity and protective immunity of in vitro transcribed Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV TC-83 strain) self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein in wild type (S-WT) and stabilized pre-fusion conformations (S-PP). Immunization with S-WT and S-PP saRNA induced specific neutralizing antibody responses in both K18-Tg hACE2 (K18) and BALB/c mice, as assessed using SARS-CoV-2 pseudotyped viruses. Protective immunity was assessed in challenge experiments. Two immunizations with S-WT and S-PP induced protective immunity, evidenced by lower mortality, lowe...

Where I am from matters: factors influencing behavioral and emotional changes in autistic individuals during COVID-19 in Latin America
ConclusionOur findings highlight differences and predictions of behavioral challenges and psychological changes based on certain contextual factors and individual characteristics while experiencing severe life stressors such as a worldwide pandemic. This knowledge could help inform policies and decrees aimed at protecting those most vulnerable due to their increased difficulty adapting to change. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Peru moves to crack down on scientific fraudsters
Lawmakers in Peru are poised to approve legislation that would make it easier to investigate and punish researchers who engage in fraudulent publishing practices, including paying to have their names added to a scientific paper. The move comes as Peru’s national science agency seeks to crack down on authorship buying and other unethical practices. It recently removed two scientists accused of violations from a national registry that is key to receiving government grants, job promotions, and salary bonuses. And officials are investigating many more researchers in the wake of an October media report that identified 1...

A ghostly quasiparticle rooted in a century-old Italian mystery could unlock quantum computing ’s potential
Santa Barbara, California —Reclusive and disaffected, Ettore Majorana liked to work in the shadows. But after his friend Emilio Segrè dragged him into Enrico Fermi’s elite Roman physics club in the late 1920s, Majorana’s stature in atomic physics quickly grew. His mostly unpublished premonitions were eerily prescient: Among others, he famously intuited the existence of the neutron from prior experiments. And in 1937, he conjured up a completely new kind of particle . Physicists had learned that every fundamental particle seems to have an antimatter counterpart, an idea Segrè would later earn a Nobel ...

Social support networks and life cycle stage of Venezuelan immigrant families
CONCLUSION: Families rely heavily on their nuclear structure for support, with formal institutions acting as secondary resources. The predominant life cycle stage is focused on families with young children. More efforts are needed to strengthen formal support networks.PMID:38088659 | DOI:10.1590/0034-7167-2022-0790 (Source: Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem)
