Xanthan-carrageenan film containing sesame seed oil: A nanocomposite pharmaceutical platform for trichomoniasis treatment
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Dec 8:128701. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.128701. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection that poses significant complications for women. Challenges in treatment include adverse effects and resistance to standard antimicrobial agents. Given this context, a sesame seed oil nanoemulsion (SONE) was developed and showed anti-Trichomonas vaginalis activity. To facilitate the local application of SONE, a polysaccharide film was developed using xanthan gum (XG) and κ-carrageenan gum (CG). A blend of XG and CG (at 2 %, ratio 1:3) plasticized with glycerol ...

Presence of CRISPR CAS-Like Sequences as a Proposed Mechanism for Horizontal Genetic Exchanges between Trichomonas vaginalis and Its Associated Virus: A Comparative Genomic Analysis with the First Report of a Putative CRISPR CAS Structures in Eukaryotic Cells
CONCLUSION: According to sequences and their organization, we assume that these repeated sequences and spacer, along with their mentioned features, could be the eukaryotic homolog of prokaryotes and Archaean CRISPR systems and may involve in a process similar to the CRISPR function.PMID:38058394 | PMC:PMC10696477 | DOI:10.1155/2023/8069559 (Source: Biomed Res)

The World Health Organization estimates nearly 374 million new cases of curable STIs yearly. Global efforts to control their spread have been insufficient in fulfilling their objective. As there is no vaccine for many of these infections, these efforts are focused on education and condom distribution. The development of vaccines for STIs is vital for successfully halting their spread. The field of immu...

Sexually transmitted infections with Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis in pregnant women as detected by molecular testing
Conclusion: Identifying the microorganisms present in the microbiota of pregnant women is of the utmost importance in assuring the appropriate treatment for each pathogen, thus avoiding complications both for the woman and for her fetus. These results should serve to stimulate the debate on implementing these tests as routine during prenatal care. (Source: Indian Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

Lower genital tract infections between 18 and 24 weeks of pregnancy and its association with adverse pregnancy outcome
Conclusion: In this study, the most common LGTI prevalent in pregnant women was BV and the least common was trichomoniasis. There was a significant positive association present between LGTIs and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as SPTD and PROM. (Source: Indian Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

Prevalence and incidence of sexually transmitted infections among South African women initiating injectable and long-acting contraceptives
CONCLUSIONS: Although the study participants received extensive counselling on the importance of condom use, this study highlights the high prevalence and incidence of STIs in South African women, especially amongst young women, emphasising the need for better STI screening and management strategies.PMID:37948399 | PMC:PMC10637674 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0294285 (Source: Herpes)
