Sorting out risk genes for brain development disorders
Gene discovery research is uncovering similarities and differences underlying a variety of disorders affecting the developing brain, including autism, attention deficits, tics, intellectual impairments, developmental delays and language difficulties. Researchers found some genes are more closely associated with autism and others with intellectual impairments, but many times there is overlap, indicating some genes pose broader risks. Certain genes were detected only in males with high-functioning autism. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

The nightmare ends the same way every time: I drive up on my house and see police cars with lights on. Policemen with guns drawn. I see a young man in a red hoodie lying face down. Bleeding. Shot. I approach the person on the ground ― cops yell to stop, but I push past them. I roll him over and pull off the hood... and it’s RJ, my teenaged son with autism. Book Review: Never Leave Your Dead
On March 7, 1953, Donald Watkins, a WWII veteran and China Marine, shot and killed his wife and mother-in-law. Judged criminally insane, Watkins served his sentence for this crime at Fairview State Hospital in Pennsylvania, one of the most abusive institutions for the mentally ill in American history. Eventually released thanks to the efforts of two young law students, Donald rejoined society—he even married again.
