Acceptance of Routine Vaccines in Pregnancy during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusion During the COVID-19 pandemic era, pregnant people at large were more likely to accept the influenza vaccine. However, this trend did not apply to Tdap, and high-risk groups with public insurance and medical comorbidities. This study highlights potential disparities in vaccination rates, which need to be accounted for when evaluating national vaccine trends. These data support increased efforts in vaccine counseling for high-risk populations. Dog and Cat Bites: Rapid Evidence Review
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Nov;108(5):501-505.ABSTRACTAnimal bites are a significant burden to health care systems worldwide. In the United States, dog bites account for an average of 337,000 emergency visits and generate medical costs of up to $2 billion per year. Most animal bites in adults and children are from a dog, and most bite patients are children who have been bitten by animals known to them. Dog bites may cause crush and soft-tissue avulsion, whereas cat bites usually cause deeper puncture-type wounds. Children most often present with dog bites on the head and neck, and adolescents and adults usually present with do...

Prevalence and determinants of two or more doses of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine immunization among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa: Evidence from recent demographic and health survey data
CONCLUSION: In sub-Saharan Africa, less than half of pregnant women were immunized with two or more doses of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine. Women's education and women's employment positively affected immunization with two or more doses of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine. Women's age group of 36-49 years, unwanted pregnancy, poor household wealth index, husbands having no formal education, and community illiteracy negatively affected receipt of two or more doses of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine. Therefore, policymakers should take into account the determinants of tetanus toxoid immunization throughout its impleme...

MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Nov 10;72(45):1217-1224. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7245a2.ABSTRACTU.S. states and local jurisdictions set vaccination requirements for school attendance and conditions and procedures for exemptions from these requirements. States annually report data to CDC on the number of children in kindergarten who meet, are exempt from, or are in the process of meeting requirements. National- and state-level estimates for complete vaccination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR); diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP); poliovirus vaccine (polio); and varicella vaccine (VAR); ex...

Quantitative mechanistic model reveals key determinants of placental IgG transfer and informs prenatal immunization strategies
by Remziye E. Wessel, Sepideh Dolatshahi Transplacental antibody transfer is crucially important in shaping neonatal immunity. Recently, prenatal maternal immunization has been employed to boost pathogen-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) transfer to the fetus. Multiple factors have been implicated in antibody transfer, but how these key dynamic regulators work together to elicit the observed selectivity is pertinent to engineering vaccines for mothers to optimally immunize their newborns. Here, we present the first quantitative mechanistic model to uncover the determinants of placental antibody transfer and inform personali...

Association between women ’s experience of domestic violence and childhood vaccination in West Africa: Cross-sectional analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data
ConclusionsThere was no significant association between a woman ’s exposure to domestic violence and whether her child was fully vaccinated. Further work is needed to understand the contextual factors which may explain potential variations between countries. (Source: PLoS One)
