Humoral and cellular immune responses induced by serogroup W135 meningococcal conjugate and polysaccharide vaccines
Vaccine. 2024 Mar 19:S0264-410X(24)00326-8. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInvestigating the mechanisms by which W135 meningococcal conjugate (PSW135-TT) activates adaptive immune responses in mice can provide a comprehensive understanding of the immune mechanisms of bacterial polysaccharide conjugate vaccines. We compared B-cell and T-cell immune responses immunized with W135 meningococcal capsular polysaccharides (PSW135), tetanus toxoid (TT) and PSW135-TT in mice. The results showed that PSW135-TT could induce higher PSW135-specific and TT-specific IgG antibodies with a significant enh...

Is vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella associated with reduced rates of antibiotic treatments among children below the age of 2  years? Nationwide register-based study from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden
CONCLUSIONS: Across the Nordic countries, receipt of MMR vaccine after DTaP3 was associated with an 11% lower rate of antibiotic treatments. The negative control analysis suggests that the findings are affected by residual confounding. Findings suggest that potential non-specific effects of MMR vaccine are of limited clinical and public health importance for the milder infections treated out-of-hospital in the Nordic setting.PMID:38508926 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.026 (Source: Vaccine)

Urgent Management of Penetrating Ocular Injury: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
J Acute Med. 2024 Mar 1;14(1):39-41. doi: 10.6705/j.jacme.202403_14(1).0005.ABSTRACTOcular globe injury is a severe ophthalmic emergency that requires immediate attention in the emergency department. In this case report, we present a 35-year-old male who suffered a penetrating ocular injury and globe rupture caused by a nail puncture. The patient presented with severe pain and visual loss and was treated with tetanus vaccination, empirical antibiotics, and pain control, followed by an urgent orbital computed tomography (CT) scan and consultation with an ophthalmologist. The CT scan revealed a retained nail in the ocular sp...

Vaccination during pregnancy and modulation of IgG response to pertussis vaccines in infants: The impact of different vaccine formulations
Vaccine. 2024 Mar 8:S0264-410X(24)00300-1. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe IgG response following infant diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) immunization is influenced by the formulation of the infant and/or the adult vaccine (Tdap) given during pregnancy. DTaP vaccines containing either 3 (DTaP3) or 5 (DTaP5) pertussis antigens are commonly used. By conducting a secondary analysis of a large randomized controlled trial, we compared IgG levels against pertussis vaccine antigens in children of Td- and Tdap5-vaccinated mothers, after stratifying by infant vaccine formulation. A...

Co-administration of the adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine with other adult vaccines: An overview
CONCLUSIONS: Co-administration of RZV with routine vaccines does not significantly alter the reactogenicity, immunogenicity or safety of RZV or the co-administered vaccine. Healthcare practitioners should consider routine co-administration of RZV with other adult vaccines to improve vaccination coverage.PMID:38423814 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.035 (Source: Vaccine)

Cost-effectiveness analysis of pertussis booster vaccination for adolescents in Japan
CONCLUSION: The cost-effectiveness of replacing the DT vaccine with the DTaP vaccine is affected by the level of pertussis morbidity, with the ICER becoming more favorable in the high-morbidity case. The indirect effect has little impact on the ICER. Thus, policy-makers should continue to monitor the pertussis epidemic in the post-COVID-19 era, and determine the need to introduce a booster based on perceived trends.PMID:38418340 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.040 (Source: Vaccine)

Intensification of integrated immunization services to recover routine vaccination coverage and bring COVID-19 vaccine to the population of Iraq in 2022
CONCLUSION: In the context of global encouragement to integrate vaccination services, Iraq's 3IS approach enabled dramatic improvements in RI coverage, virtual elimination of zero-dose status among children born during the pandemic, and small improvements in COVID-19 and adult vaccination. Our findings provide lessons for future integrated primary care towards universal health coverage in Iraq, and for other countries yet to undertake integration.PMID:38418341 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.038 (Source: Vaccine)
