Unity Farm Journal - Second Week of September 2016
Hurricane Hermine came and went, dropping only 2/10ths of an inch of rain on the drought parched soil of Eastern Massachusetts.  Although we had 20 mph wind gusts, none of the stressed trees were knocked over.We ’re continuing to irrigate our crops using our 60 zones of drip irrigation, while trying to preserve the well.  We ’re praying for rain.We ’re always learning at Unity Farm.  This week ’s question - can a pig get cyanide toxicity from eating peach pits?  Each week we receive the discarded fruit and vegetables from Tilly and Salvy ’s farmstand, feeding them to the pigs, poultry and...

Unity Farm Journal - Third Week of August 2016
I ’m on “vacation” this week, working remotely from the farm, so no Wednesday blog post, but here’s the Unity Farm update.I always tell my staff that management is balancing scope, time and resources.  To much scope and not enough makes resources very grouchy unless they are augmented. The same thing is true about managing a farm.  Unless you set a scope that is achievable with the resources you have, the time (defined as the seasons in the farming year), living things, including your own well being, will suffer. As we plan for 2017, something we ’re doing during my slack time this week, we’e set a...

Tahcheen-e Esfenaj (Baked Persian Rice Cake with Lamb, Spinach & Prunes)
I must apologize for the infrequency of my blog posts over the past year. My new position at the medical school has kept me much busier than I’d ever imagined. Now, a year later, things are finally settling in and I’m hoping to bring this blog thing back to life, if only because the act of writing truly grounds me. One of the better parts of my new position has been getting to know our Qatar-based medical school faculty and staff, who sent me the most amazing Persian cookbook – Saraban: A Chef’s Journey through Persia by Greg and Lucy Malouf. (Thank you Shahrad and team!) This is a cookbook tha...

Why Bad News Is Not Always Bad
Last month, the cover of BusinessWeek featured an article, How Big Pharma Uses Charity Programs to Cover for Drug Price Hikes, focused on co-pay charities for Medicare patients. I of course had heard about such co-pay charities before, and even had the opportunity to meet with a representative of one a few years ago, but frankly I had no idea what they did. So when the article came out, outlining the "evils" of this practice, it caught my attention. By catching my attention, it actually saved my elderly parents significant amounts of money. My father and mother are both retired, living on a small pension and Social Secur...

Monkey Pie
Ever have a slice of monkey pie? No? Well, that’s good, because there is no such thing, at least not in our part of the world. And it would be weird if there was. It would be contrary to instinctive notions, eating a creature similar to humans. You wouldn’t eat human pie and, for similar reasons, you wouldn’t eat monkey pie. Would you agree that every creature on earth, human and otherwise, follows an instinctive dietary program?     This toad is an insectivore, consuming flies and grasshoppers in order to survive. Nobody had to tell this toad that flies are delicious. Properly nourished...

New Marketing Strategy for Direct Access Testing: Monitoring Wellness and Fitness
I have long been interested in direct access testing (DAT) and have blogged about the topic for ten years. Here's a link to an early note from 2006 (see: Four Categories of Direct Access Testing). Over this time, DAT has never gained much market share or attention until recently when the travails of Theranos have brought the topic to the level of consciousness for many. Theranos lobbied with success in Arizona for legislation to allow DAT. This was in the pursuit of its own business interests but it also allowed Sonora Quest Labs to begin accept consumer speci...

Unity Farm Journal - Third Week of May 2016
Wedding plans have occupied much of this week at Unity Farm, ensuring that my daughter’s marriage weekend has perfect logistics.    A wedding on a farm is more challenging than you think - how do you prevent flying guinea fowl from leaving “gifts” on the guests?   Should the pigs be moved to minimimze squealing during the ceremony?   How do you prevent chickens from eating the flowers?   We’ll be serving Unity Farm foods and beverages, accompanied by vegan/vegetarian catering.   The family begins arriving tonight. This week, another goose,  Hermes, was born.    Our weathe...

Unity Farm Journal - Second Week of May 2016
It’s Spring so it’s time for new farm babies.   Welcome Athena and Apollo, two baby geese born this week.    They have the benefit of 3 mothers and 1 father watching over them.   The adults took them to the pond and taught them how to swim within a few hours after hatching.   We’re keeping the goose pen closed during the day when we’re not around because of all the hawk activity.   A week old goose is an easy target.Temperatures are edging up to the mid 70’s so the pigs are getting hot.   Yesterday, we moved them to their summer paddock with its shade and cool mud.   The pi...

On St. Patrick’s Day eat green… leafy vegetables
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here are a few reminders about the benefits of leafy green vegetables. Lin Yan published the benefits of these foods in USDA Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center News, http://1.usa.gov/1U9vD8x on March 23, 2013. “Dark green leafy vegetables are great sources of nutrition. Salad greens, kale and spinach are rich in vitamins A, C, E and K, and broccoli, bok choy and mustard are also rich in many of the B-vitamins. These vegetables also contain an abundance of carotenoids—antioxidants that protect cells and play roles in blocking the early stages of cancer. They also c...

Recommended Probiotics for Kids
Promoting healthy, diverse gut bacteria appears able to make a big difference in keeping us healthy. That’s why I often recommend probiotics for the kids in my pediatric practice. This is especially true after a course of antibiotics. Many parents are confused by the wide array of probiotics available and ask for my recommendations. There are several nice options. I suggest trying one and observing changes in y0ur child’s digestive health. If you don’t see the desired result (either stool that is too loose or continued constipation), try a different brand. Brands of Recommended Probiotics for Kids Garden of ...
