E ‑Cigarettes as Harm Reduction for Pregnant Tobacco Smokers
Jeffrey A. SingerLast week U.K. researchers published a study providing more evidence of the harm ‐reduction potential of nicotine containing e‑cigarettes—this time for pregnant women who smoke tobacco. The randomized controlled trial, begun in 2019, included 1,140 participants from 24 UK hospitals. Pregnant women who smoked were placed on either nicotine patches or refillable nicotine e ‑cigarettes to replace tobacco. The researchers found both replacement methods to have an equal safety profile. However, low birth weight was less frequent among the e‑cigarette arm of the study compared to the nicotine pa...

Myths and misinformation: mapping the barriers to smoking cessation and the uptake of nicotine alternatives
This report uncovers a huge level of misunderstanding around the harms posed by tobacco, with 93 per cent of Brits overestimating the health risk of nicotine, one of the main chemicals in tobacco. The over 60s and those from the lowest socioeconomic groups (C2DE) are the most likely to be misinformed, illustrating the scale of the task at hand for the government.ReportMore detail (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

A 30-something with Chest pain, elevated troponin, with Subtle ST Elevation and hyperacute T-waves.
A 30-something male presented in the middle of the night with several hours of sharp, non-radiating, left sided chest pain.  It was there earlier, went away, and then returned approximately 1 hour prior to arrival. He is a smoker and has some family history of early MI.  Exam and vital signs were normal. Here was the triage ECG:There appears to be diffuse ST Elevation (II, III, aVF with reciprocal STD in aVL, V3-V6, and lead I, with T-waves that appear to be hyperacute (broad and fat, but on the other hand they have no straightening of the ST segment).  ST depression and T-wave inversion in V2 sugge...

The Influence of Lifestyle Choices on Survival to Age 85
This study demonstrates the importance of having no or few risk factors in midlife with respect to longevity. We observed a substantial increase in the risk of death before the age of 85 among women who were daily smokers, physically inactive, unmarried, or obese in midlife. This risk may be mitigated by lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and becoming physically active later in life. (Source: Fight Aging!)

In conclusion, remofuscin activates the lysosome-to-nucleus pathway in C. elegans, thereby increasing the expression levels of xenobiotic detoxification genes resulted in extending their lifespan. Naked Mole-Rat Skin Shows Fewer Signs of Aging https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/05/naked-mole-rat-skin-shows-fewer-signs-of-aging/ Naked mole-rats exhibit a maximum life span that is many times longer than is the case for similarly sized mammals. Further, they are negligibly senescent, showing few age-related declines in function across much of that lengthy life span. That includes maintenance of stem ...

Factors to weigh when choosing substance use disorder treatment
During the pandemic, the already significant number of people living with substance use disorder increased. According to data gathered by the CDC, in June 2020, 13 percent of Americans surveyed said they had started using substances (not including alcohol and tobacco) or increased their use in response to the stress of the pandemic. The numberRead more …Factors to weigh when choosing substance use disorder treatment originally appeared inKevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Lower Physical Performance Correlates with Some Inflammation Markers
Researchers here report on a study showing that lower physical performance in old age correlates with only one of a small panel of selected blood markers of inflammation. It is expected that a greater burden of chronic inflammation will cause a more rapid decline in later life, including the loss of strength and resilience leading into frailty. Inflammation and its interaction with tissue function is sufficiently complex a topic, and sufficiently varied from individual to individual, that we might expect to see mixed results like these, however. Maintenance of physical performance is essential for achievement of h...

Supporting residents, addressing inequalities
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) -This joint report published by ASH and the Housing Learning and Improvement Network, sets out the case and opportunities for addressing smoking in social housing. It outlines the case for reducing rates of smoking in the social housing sector as part of social landlords ’ health and wellbeing activity and aims to equip the social housing and public health sectors with the information required to collaboratively progress action on smoking and improve the support available to residents who smoke. It also makes recommendations to central government to better support local action on this i...

New Study Finds that Switching from Smoking to Vaping Reduces Heart Disease Risk by 34%
This study should cause the FDA to stop everything they are doing and re-assess the balance between the benefits and costs of making vaping products available to adult smokers. Rather than ban 99% of these products, which the agency seems poised to do, it should allow most of these products to remain on the market. However, I believe that the agency should also promulgate a rule that limits the sale of all tobacco and nicotine products to stores that exclusively sell these products and are only open to adults ages 21 and older. This is the best way to balance the risks and benefits of vaping.Unfortunately, I have little do...

Few Evident Relationships Between Accelerated Epigenetic Aging and Cancer
Epigenetic clocks are produced by identifying characteristic shifts in epigenetic marks with age, the decorations on the genome that control gene expression. It remains unclear as to the exact relationship between specific epigenetic marks and the underlying damage and dysfunction of aging, and so it remains unknown as to how comprehensively epigenetic clocks reflect the processes of aging: do all of the processes of aging contribute, or only some of them? If the latter, it will be hard to use epigenetic clocks to assess the quality of potential rejuvenation therapies. Removing that uncertainty will require a great deal of...

Quiz post - which of these, if any, are OMI? What is the South African Flag Sign? Will you activate the cath lab? Can you tell the difference on ECG?
Written by Pendell Meyers, additions and edits by Grauer, Smith, McLarenBelow we have 5 cases of adults (ranging from 40-70 years old) who all presented to the ED with acute nontraumatic chest pain that sounded at least somewhat like potential ACS to the provider. You should look at each ECG and decide if it is OMI, not OMI, or something else. Our goal in this post is to compare and contrast OMIs with false positives that mimic them. In this post we will examine the anterolateral distribution that has been described as the " South African Flag Sign. " (SAFS)It is very hard to describe why an ECG expert can easily...

“Digital therapeutics” vs. “Mental health apps”: A growing debate on standards, regulation and efficacy
The efficacy of Mental Health Apps (pharmaforum): In January, PLOS Digital Health published a study which claimed that there’s “sparse” data to support the efficacy of most mental health apps. In their meta-analysis of published studies, the authors found universal deficiencies and concluded that there’s no convincing evidence that app-based interventions deliver meaningful outcomes. Without digging further, one might think the current case for digital therapeutics is weak. I reviewed all 14 meta-analyses included in the study and found the analysis to be accurate, but incomplete. These analyses focused exclusively...
