Effect of Lidocaine-prilocaine Cream on Using CPAP Mask Amongst Patients Undergone PAPtitration Study for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Randomized Controlled Trial Study
ConclusionThis study shows that both Petroleum jelly and Lidocaine-prilocaine cream can be used for decreasing pressure sensation during CPAP titration among patients who suffer excessive facial discomfort immediately after putting on a CPAP mask. Impact of positive airway pressure therapy on intraocular pressure in obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: The available albeit limited evidence suggests that CPAP use, particularly at higher pressures, is linked to an elevation in IOP. However, high quality evidence from well-designed RCTs is needed to confirm or refute this findings.PMID:38689462 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241249502 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Sleep-wake behavior, perceived fatigability, and cognitive reserve in older adults
DISCUSSION: SRI can amplify impaired cognitive abilities through exacerbation of fatigability in patients with aMCI with below-mean CR. Therefore, improving sleep-wake regulation and leisure activities may protect against fatigability and cognitive decline.HIGHLIGHTS: Clinical fatigue and fatigability cannot be alleviated by rest. Clinical fatigability disrupts daily activities during preclinical Alzheimer's. High cognitive reserve mitigates sleep-wake disturbance effects. High cognitive reserve attenuates clinical fatigability effects on daily functioning. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea potentiates Alzheimer's patholog...

Hypoxic and Autonomic Mechanisms from Sleep-Disordered Breathing Leading to Cardiopulmonary Dysfunction
Sleep Med Clin. 2024 Jun;19(2):229-237. doi: 10.1016/j.jsmc.2024.02.003. Epub 2024 Mar 7.ABSTRACTObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder. Its prevalence has increased due to increasing obesity and improved screening and diagnostic strategies. OSA overlaps with cardiopulmonary diseases to promote intermittent hypoxia and autonomic dysfunction. Intermittent hypoxia increases the risk for oxidative stress and inflammation, which promotes endothelial dysfunction and predisposes to atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular complications. OSA is associated with an increased sympathetic nervous s...

Head Position During Sleep: Potential Implications for Patients with Neurodegenerative Disorders
Background: In 2015, Lee et al. observed sleeping position influenced the efficiency of glymphatic clearance of β-amyloid in anesthetized rats with the lateral position being more efficient than supine. In 2018, Levendowski et al. reported supine sleep> 2-hours per night was associated with neurodegenerative disorders (NDD) independent of age, sex, obstructive sleep apnea, and snoring. In 2019, Simka et al. revealed that in lateral positions the internal jugular vein above the heart partially collapses to optimize cerebral venous outflow and glymphatic clearance while in the supine position both internal jugular veins are...

Po-02-080 direct-from-ecg apnea-hypopnea index (ahi) for improving afib and obstructive sleep apnea patient outcomes
Nearly 50% of patients with AFib have comorbid obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and 75% of OSA patients report some form of arrhythmia. Untreated OSA increases likelihood of poor outcomes for AFib patients including failed treatment, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death. We have developed an ECG-based alternative to the home sleep test (HST) for estimating an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and assessing OSA severity alongside quantification of AFib, Supraventricular, Junctional, Ventricular, Heart Block and Conduction defects with high sensitivity. Po-05-136 association between obstructive sleep apnea treatment and atrial fibrillation recurrence following catheter ablation: a meta-analysis
The presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a comorbidity has been well documented to be associated with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence in AF patients who underwent catheter ablation. A recent small sample randomized controlled trial (RCT), reported no benefit in preventing AF recurrence post-catheter ablation among OSA patients treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) compared with no CPAP. Dyspnea and Quality of Life Improvements with Management of Comorbid Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Chronic Lung Disease
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has emerged as a significant and prevalent comorbidity associated with chronic lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and interstitial lung diseases. These overlap syndromes are associated with worse patient-reported outcomes (sleep quality, quality of life measures, mental health) than each condition independently. Observational studies suggest that patients with overlap syndrome who are adherent to positive airway pressure therapy report improved quality of life, sleep quality, depression, and daytime symptoms. Screening for and management of OSA in patients ...

The Effect of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Therapy on Serum Caspase-3 Level in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
CONCLUSION: The results of this study did not reveal a relationship between the severity of OSA and caspase-3 levels. However, blood caspase-3 levels decreased as treatment compliance increased, suggesting that CPAP treatment may correct increased apoptosis in OSA. There is a need for more comprehensive studies on this issue.PMID:38683249 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-024-03039-8 (Source: Sleep and Breathing)
