Clinical impact of craniectomy on shunt-dependent hydrocephalus after intracerebral hemorrhage: A propensity score-matched analysis
ConclusionDecompressive craniectomy seems to increase shunt-dependent hydrocephalus among patients undergoing surgical ICH evacuation. The decision to perform a craniectomy for patients with ICH should be carefully individualized while considering the risk of hydrocephalus. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Severe Early-Onset Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding in a Neonate Born to a Mother with Crohn's Disease in Clinical Remission: A Case Report
We report the case of a neonate with early-onset VKDB born to a mother with Crohn's disease. The neonate developed severe cerebellar hemorrhage on the day of birth and subsequent noncommunicating hydrocephalus requiring a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The mother had a 14-year history of Crohn's disease and short bowel owing to intestinal resection. She was in complete remission during pregnancy according to the Crohn's Disease Activity Index. Endoscopic examination performed shortly before pregnancy revealed inflammatory findings in the residual small intestine. Her blood tests at delivery showed an elevated prothrombin indu...

Predictors of shunt insertion in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage —a single-centre retrospective analysis
ConclusionIn this study, clinical variables including use of the predictive score SDASH predicted neither the overall need for nor the timing of shunt placement after aSAH. The homogeneous distribution of data between the three different groups renders strong independent clinical predictive factors unlikely. Thus, attempts to predict a permanent shunt requirement from these variables may be futile in these patients. (Source: Acta Neurochirurgica)

Bowel perforation and anal ventriculoperitoneal shunt migration: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Bowel and anal shunt migration is a relatively rare complication occurring predominantly within the initial weeks after the initial surgery. This condition leads to infectious complications, which can potentially be life-threatening. Urgent management is required, and in most cases, the removal of the shunt through the anus is sufficient. Early intervention generally results in favorable outcomes.PMID:38234714 | PMC:PMC10792256 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtumed.2023.12.002 (Source: Anal Sci)

Prevalence of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus in patients with vertebral compression fractures
CONCLUSION: Screening for iNPH in elderly patients with VCFs can allow early diagnosis of iNPH and benefit them more from surgical treatment.PMID:38213459 | PMC:PMC10783668 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_818_2023 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Case report: Use of markerless augmented reality system for ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement
CONCLUSION: In this study, we describe the use of AR for VP shunt placement. The AR system consists of a Microsoft HoloLens 2 head-mounted display and a novel markerless registration system, which was used to register patient-specific 3D models onto the patient's head for visualizing target anatomy and planning an operative approach. The AR system was used to plan the VP shunt placement in the operating room. This system is easy to use and provides a visualization of the patient's anatomy, which can be used to plan an optimal trajectory. We believe that this has the potential to improve the accuracy and outcomes of VP shun...

Late intrathecal retraction of a lumboperitoneal shunt
CONCLUSION: Patients with LP shunts may develop lumbar catheter lacerations secondary to a "pinching" effect from adjacent spinous processes, resulting in intrathecal catheter migration.PMID:38213441 | PMC:PMC10783681 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_742_2023 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Effects of modified external ventricular drainage vs. an Ommaya reservoir in the management of hydrocephalus with intracranial infection in pediatric patients
ConclusionThe Ommaya reservoir and M-EVD are safe and effective for pediatric patients with HII. Both methods reduce the intracranial pressure and alleviate the symptoms of hydrocephalus, although there are differences between the two methods. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Helmet Therapy for the Management of Deformational Plagiocephaly in Pediatric Patients with Shunted Hydrocephalus
CONCLUSIONS: Helmet therapy appears to be a safe and efficacious management strategy for deformational plagiocephaly in patients with shunted hydrocephalus. Despite the occasional need for additional fittings and surveillance beyond the normal schedule, in all cases appropriately fitting helmets were achieved and no major adverse events occurred. This cohort represents a proof of principle for the safety and efficacy of helmet therapy in patients with shunted hydrocephalus. Further work in larger prospective cohorts is needed to confirm these initial findings.PMID:38193166 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231214125 (Source: The Cleft...
