Antipsychotics and the risk of diabetes and death among adults with serious mental illnesses
CONCLUSIONS: Haloperidol's, olanzapine's, and risperidone's lower diabetes risks relative to aripiprazole were not robust in sensitivity analyses but quetiapine's higher mortality risk proved robust. Findings expand the evidence on antipsychotics' risks, suggesting a need for caution in the use of quetiapine among individuals with SMI.PMID:37753625 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723001502 (Source: Psychological Medicine)

Trauma Exposure in Migrant Children
Trauma exposure significantly impacts sleep in children. Nightmares are common. Evidence-based therapies are superior to medications but may not always be available in acute settings. No FDA-approved medications exist for the treatment of trauma-related sleep disturbances in youth. The evidence-base for the use of medications is largely based on case reports, retrospective chart reviews, clinical opinion, and adult studies. This evidence is reviewed for a number of medications, including prazosin, trazodone, alpha-2 agonists, quetiapine, and others. (Source: Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America)

Potential Drug Interactions in Terminally-Ill Cancer Patients, a Report from the Middle East
This study aims to evaluate the epidemiology of potential drug interactions in terminally-ill cancer patients receiving exclusively supportive care. In this cross-sectional study, during a 6-month follow-up, we considered the medical record of terminally-ill cancer patients referred to palliative care at the cancer center in Isfahan, Iran. Potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were assessed by Lexi-Interact ver.1.1 online software. During the study period, 133 terminally-ill cancer patients were recruited. We detected 1678 DDIs with moderate or major severity levels. Among them, 330, 219, 32, 1075, and 51 interactions we...

Treatment-resistant depression: definition, prevalence, detection, management, and investigational interventions
World Psychiatry. 2023 Oct;22(3):394-412. doi: 10.1002/wps.21120.ABSTRACTTreatment-resistant depression (TRD) is common and associated with multiple serious public health implications. A consensus definition of TRD with demonstrated predictive utility in terms of clinical decision-making and health outcomes does not currently exist. Instead, a plethora of definitions have been proposed, which vary significantly in their conceptual framework. The absence of a consensus definition hampers precise estimates of the prevalence of TRD, and also belies efforts to identify risk factors, prevention opportunities, and effective inte...
