IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6303: Generalized Linear Models to Forecast Malaria Incidence in Three Endemic Regions of Senegal
In this study, we formulate a generalized linear model based on Poisson and negative binomial regression models for forecasting malaria incidence, taking into account climatic variables (such as the monthly rainfall, average temperature, relative humidity), other predictor variables (the insecticide-treated bed-nets (ITNs) distribution and Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT)) and the history of malaria incidence in Dakar, Fatick and Kedougou, three different endemic regions of Senegal. A forecasting algorithm is developed by taking the meteorological explanatory variable Xj at time&amp...

Ex-ante impact of pest des petits ruminant control on micro and macro socioeconomic indicators in Senegal: A system dynamics modelling approach
This study ’s findings offer an empirical justification for a sustainable approach to PPR eradication. The information on the socioeconomic benefits of vaccination can be promoted via sensitization campaigns to stimulate farmers’ uptake of the practice. This study can inform investment in PPR control. Nephroprotective effects of Acacia senegal against aflatoxicosis via targeting inflammatory and apoptotic signaling pathways
In conclusion, current study obviously confirms the alleviating effects of Gum supplementation against AFB1-induced renal dysfunction, oxidative harm, inflammation, and cell death. These mitigating effects are suggested to be attributed to Gum's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Our results recommend Gum supplementation as add-on agents to food that might aid in protection from AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity.PMID:37385018 | DOI:10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115194 (Source: Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety)

Sustainability energy security: 20 years assessment of the West African Nations using a comprehensive entropy-TOPSIS analysis
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jun 14. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28116-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEnergy security in Africa has become a crucial issue in recent times due to the imminent lack of access to electricity, increasing energy demand informed by economic growth, population growth, and forecasts that point to business as usual on the continent based on these variables. While the West African region has abundant energy resources, they have not yet been translated into sustainable energy security, as it pertains to energy availability. This is a persistent challenge that needs to be addressed to support economi...

NIH mandate that foreign partners of U.S. scientists regularly submit all data stirs outcry
Many U.S. biomedical researchers and their collaborators abroad are reacting with alarm to a new National Institutes of Health requirement that foreign groups send their NIH partners copies of their lab notebooks and other raw data at least every few months. It’s “crazy,” says Brazilian researcher Mauro Teixeira, who gets NIH funding through a U.S. university for a mosquito-borne disease study. The 19 May policy change , sparked by concerns about U.S.-funded virology research in China, could impose a costly new paperwork burden on all NIH grants with foreign partners, from lab studies to clinical tria...

In Africa, doubts about vaccines grew during pandemic, survey finds
Public confidence in vaccines has declined across sub-Saharan Africa since the COVID-19 pandemic, new research shows. A survey of 17,000 people in eight African nations found that the share of respondents agreeing with the statement that “vaccines are important for children” dropped by up to 20 percentage points from 2020 to 2022. The survey also revealed growing doubts about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and other immunizations in some nations and subnational regions. The trends represent “an early warning signal” for efforts to widely vaccinate children and adults, says Charles She...

Evolution of laparoscopic surgery in a sub-Saharan African country: a 30-year literature review in Senegal
ConclusionsThis systematic review showed a predominance of the laparoscopy publications from the capital in Dakar with favorable outcomes. This technique should be popularized in the different regions of the country and its indications expanded.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Phytochemical Content, Antibacterial Activity, and Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory, and Cytotoxic Effects of Traditional Medicinal Plants against Respiratory Tract Bacterial Pathogens
This study aimed to determine the in vitro antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic effects of indigenous medicinal plants used in the treatment of RTIs, namely, Senna petersiana, Gardenia volkensii, Acacia senegal, and Clerodendrum glabrum. Dried leaves were extracted using various organic solvents. Antibacterial activity was quantified using the microbroth dilution assay. Protein denaturation assays were used to evaluate anti-inflammatory activity. The cytotoxicity of the extracts towards THP-1 macrophages was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Antioxidant...

Local contextual factors of child stunting found via shared values of stakeholder groups: an exploratory case study in Kaffrine, Senegal
CONCLUSIONS: Local contextual factors were identified. Pre-knowledge of these could significantly improve effectiveness of intervention designs locally, with possible applicability at other sites. The WeValue_InSitu approach proved efficient and useful for making tangible contextual factors and their potential links to stunting, via a lens of local shared values, showing general promise for intervention research.PMID:37288526 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023001088 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)
