Power morcellation: Questions linger for controversial tech
Dr. Amy Reed’s tragic case brought to light the cancer risks posed by power morcellation. Her death hasn’t stopped lingering questions about the technology. Power morcellators were used for 20 years to laparoscopically remove fibroids, benign tumors of the uterus, raising not a single adverse event report with the FDA. That all changed in 2013, when Dr. Amy Reed, an attending physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, underwent a myomectomy using power morcellation at nearby Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Reed’s fibroids were not benign, but instead a malignant form of cancer called uterine sarcoma...

Molecular culprit behind virus-mediated chronic inflammation and cancers identified
(PLOS) Within cells infected by Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), the human protein CADM1 interacts with viral proteins to promote chronic inflammation, which plays a major role in the development of cancers caused by KSHV. Richard Hunte of the University of Miami, Fla., and colleagues present these new findings in PLOS Pathogens. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

A potential new therapeutic target for Ewing sarcoma
(IDIBELL-Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute) IDIBELL researchers correlate EphA2 membrane receptor with the metastatic capacity of tumors in Ewing sarcoma.Ewing sarcoma is the second most frequent bone cancer among children and adolescents, and it is characterized by its aggressiveness and tendency to metastasize.Researchers are currently working on nanoengineering a molecule capable of blocking EphA2 and deliver drugs in a targeted manner.Research was possible thanks to the backing of Alba P é rez Foundation. Scientists tackle the aberrant epigenetic programming underlying childhood cancers
(Write Science Right) Researchers at UFRGS and the US NIH have targeted proteins that regulate chromatin in Ewing sarcoma cells, hindering malignant tumor growth. They induced chromatic relaxation by treating the cells with histone deacetylase inhibitors, reducing expression of the EWSR1-FLI-1 oncogene and other pluripotency/cell viability genes, while impairing sarcoma cell survival and growth. Decreased survival of stem-like cancer cells and re-expression of a neuronal differentiation marker were also observed. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)
