Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1673: COVID-19 and Cancer Detection in Russia
In this study, we analyzed the impact of the expected reduction in screening intensity on morbidity and mortality from certain malignancies. Cumulative data from the Russian National Cancer Registry available from 2000 to 2022 were analyzed. It was noted that there has been no noticeable effect of the COVID-19 lockdowns on mortality rates from breast, prostate, renal, or thyroid cancers. At the same time, the detectable incidence decreased markedly in 2020 at the time of the lockdowns and then returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2022. At the moment, there is no sufficient reason to believe that skipping screening tests in 2...

China set to fetch first rocks from mysterious far side of the Moon
There’s a giant hole on the backside of the Moon. The South Pole–Aitken (SPA) Basin, the Moon’s largest and oldest impact crater, is more than 2500 kilometers wide and 8 kilometers deep—nearly big enough to swallow two Indias and hide the Himalayas. Now, China plans to land in it. The basin may have been blasted out during a barrage of asteroids that pummeled Earth and other inner Solar System bodies billions of years ago, and scientists have long wanted to get their hands on SPA rocks to test the idea. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) aims to provide them with the Chang’e-6 mission, which sci...

Socioeconomic Status and CD4 Count Among People with HIV Who Inject Drugs in St. Petersburg, Russia
AbstractLack of access to resources is a “fundamental cause” of poor HIV outcomes across the care cascade globally and may have the greatest impact on groups with co-existing marginalized identities. In a sample of people living with HIV (PWH) who inject drugs and were not on antiretroviral therapy (ART), we explored associations betwe en access to resources and HIV severity. Fundamental Cause Theory (FCT) sees socioeconomic status/access to resources as a root cause of disease and emphasizes that individuals with limited resources have fewer means to mitigate health risks and implement protective behaviors, which ulti...

Rare-earth elements in the topsoils of a russian industrial city: sources and human health risk assessment
This study investigates the potential sources and human health risks of REEs contained in the topsoils of the industrial Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The study also takes into account natural sources of REE as the city is located on the border of granites (Urals) and sedimentary rocks (Western Siberia). We analyzed the concentration and distribution of REEs in the soils of four types of locations: residential courtyards, city parks, roadsides, and industrial locations. The total REE concentrations ranged from 44 to 255 mg/kg, with average concentrations of 140, 124, 113 and 89 mg/kg in the courtyards, roadsides, industrial...
