The impact of transformation zone representation on the frequency of abnormal cervical cytological results
CONCLUSION: Samples with TZ representation were associated with higher rates of abnormal results. Health professionals should be regularly trained to understand the weakness of cytological examinations when the TZ is not represented, especially in developing countries.PMID:37688813 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2023.08.394

Machine-Learning-Aided Prediction of Brain Metastases Development in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancers
CONCLUSION: Analysis of the importance of input features suggests that the models are learning the relevant relationships between clinical features/development of BM. A higher number of samples is to be prioritized to improve performance. Employed prospectively at initial diagnosis, such models can help select high-risk subgroups for surveillance brain MRI.PMID:37689579 | DOI:10.1016/j.cllc.2023.08.002

The prognostic value of lymphatic metastatic size in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Lymphatic metastatic size was an independently prognostic factor in HNSCC, which may assist in postoperative adjuvant treatment decisions.PMID:37682351 | DOI:10.1007/s00405-023-08199-z

Clinicopathologic study of stage I adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung
CONCLUSIONS: Early-stage adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung is a histological type associated with severe prognosis and postoperative recurrence, often in distant sites, in approximately one-third of cases. High serum carcinoembryonic antigen levels and vascular invasion might be risk factors of recurrence.PMID:37681230 | DOI:10.1093/jjco/hyad122

Prevalence of human papillomavirus infection in abnormal pap smears
CONCLUSION: Our study shows that the percentage of HR-HPV-positive case increases with the severity of cytologic morphology. HPV had 4 times higher positivity in squamous intraepithelial lesion as compared to ASCUS.PMID:37681080 | PMC:PMC10481853 | DOI:10.25259/Cytojournal_8_2021

Importance of tumor volume, overall treatment time and fractionation sensitivity for p16-positive and p16-negative oropharyngeal tumors
CONCLUSION: Primary tumor volume plays a crucial role in predicting local tumor response, particularly in p16-positive OPSCC. The estimated α/β-ratio for p16-positive oropharyngeal tumors aligns with previous HNSCC studies, whereas the impact of prolonged OTT was slightly less than previously reported. The differences in radiosensitivity depending on p16-status were quantified. The findings should be validated in independent cohorts.PMID:37682690 | DOI:10.1080/0284186X.2023.2251084

miR-200b-mediated reversion of a spectrum of epithelial to mesenchymal transition states in recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa squamous cell carcinomas
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, RDEB-SCCs exist in different EMT states and the level of miR-200b is indicative of how far an RDEB-SCC has gone down the EMT path. Moreover, reintroduction of miR-200b significantly reduced mesenchymal features.PMID:37681509 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljad335

A Novel Saliva and Serum miRNA Panel as a potential useful index for Oral Cancer and the Association of miR-21 with smoking history: a pilot study
Cancer Prev Res (Phila). 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1158/1940-6207.CAPR-23-0219. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTobacco use is implicated in the carcinogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which is associated with poor survival if not diagnosed early. Identification of novel non-invasive, highly sensitive, and cost-effective diagnostic and risk assessment methods for OSCC would improve early detection. Here, we report a pilot study assessing salivary and serum miRNAs associated with OSCC and stratified by smoking status. Saliva and paired serum samples were collected from 23 OSCC patients and 21 healthy volunteers, with...

Clinical Relevance of Patient-Derived Organoid of Surgically Resected Lung Cancer as an In  Vitro Model for Biomarker and Drug Testing
CONCLUSIONS: The establishment and growth rates of LTOs were associated with the histologic subtype and tumor size. LTOs derived from resected specimens have become preclinical models that can be used to predict drug responses and accelerate the development of treatment strategies for patients with rare mutations.PMID:37681218 | PMC:PMC10480534 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtocrr.2023.100554

Involvement of CHRNA6 in the Immune Response in Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma and its Potential as a Drug Target for the Disease
CONCLUSION: CHRNA6 may be associated with immune infiltration in LUSC and affects patient prognosis and immunotherapeutic response by regulating immune cells and immune pathways. In addition, adavosertib may be a potential drug for the treatment of LUSC.PMID:37680128 | DOI:10.2174/1381612829666230901143203
