The Nutritional Supplement L-Alpha Glycerylphosphorylcholine Promotes Atherosclerosis
Int J Mol Sci. 2021 Dec 15;22(24):13477. doi: 10.3390/ijms222413477.ABSTRACTL-alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC), a nutritional supplement, has been demonstrated to improve neurological function. However, a new study suggests that GPC supplementation increases incident stroke risk thus its potential adverse effects warrant further investigation. Here we show that GPC promotes atherosclerosis in hyperlipidemic Apoe-/- mice. GPC can be metabolized to trimethylamine N-oxide, a pro-atherogenic agent, suggesting a potential molecular mechanism underlying the observed atherosclerosis progression. GPC supplementation shifted t...

Early nutritional influences of cardiovascular health
Expert Rev Cardiovasc Ther. 2021 Dec 18. doi: 10.1080/14779072.2021.2021070. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence shows that nutritional choices during children's formative years, including prenatally, impacts the development of adult onset cardiovascular diseases (CVD), such as hypertension, myocardial infarction, or stroke.AREAS COVERED: This literature review aims to synthesize the current body of evidence on nutritional factors, from conception through adolescence, which may influence a person's risk factors for future development of cardiovascular disease.EXPERT OPINION: Given the escalating...

Relation of Cannabis Use to Elevated Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Score
We hypothesized that cannabis use is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. This could explain the reported link between cannabis and cardiovascular events including stroke and myocardial infarction. This analysis included 7,159 participants (age 37.8 ± 12.4 years, 48.6% men, and 61.5% Caucasian) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey years 2011 to 2018. Cannabis use was defined by self-report. Participants with a history of stroke or myocardial infarction were excluded.

Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment and Malnutrition in the Elderly (PCIME): study design and protocol
CONCLUSION: PCIME will enable us to assess the role of malnutrition in development of post stroke dementia. This study will help clinicians and researchers develop preventive measures to reduce the burden of stroke and dementia.PMID:34900843 | PMC:PMC8630267 | DOI:10.1007/s40200-021-00841-z

Promising Nutritional Fruits Against Cardiovascular Diseases: An Overview of Experimental Evidence and Understanding Their Mechanisms of Action
Vasc Health Risk Manag. 2021 Nov 23;17:739-769. doi: 10.2147/VHRM.S328096. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in both developed and developing countries, affecting millions of individuals each year. Despite the fact that successful therapeutic drugs for the management and treatment of CVDs are available on the market, nutritional fruits appear to offer the greatest benefits to the heart and have been proved to alleviate CVDs. Experimental studies have also demonstrated that nutritional fruits have potential protective effects against CVDs. The ai...

The Projected Impact of Population-Wide Achievement of LDL Cholesterol & lt;70 mg/dL on the Number of Recurrent Events Among US Adults with ASCVD
ConclusionA substantial number of recurrent ASCVD events could be averted over 10 years if all US adults with ASCVD achieved, and maintained, an LDL-C<70 mg/dL.

The Debate Over Egg Consumption and Incident Cardiovascular Disease
There is a great debate regarding the association of cholesterol intake from egg consumption and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Most studies show that moderate egg consumption is not associated with a significant increase in CVD, stroke, heart failure, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), whereas others dispute this fact and state that there is an association with increased egg consumption, especially if they are consumed with saturated fats. In addition, the recent relaxation of cholesterol intake to greater than 300 mg/d by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Nutritional Guidelin...

Association between geriatric nutritional risk index and stroke risk in hemodialysis patients: 10-years outcome of the Q-Cohort study
The geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI), which is calculated using the serum albumin level and body mass index, is a nutritional marker associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients who are receiving hemodialysis. However, no studies have examined the association between the GNRI level and the incidence of stroke in this population.

Prognostic significance of the controlling nutritional (CONUT) score in patients with acute coronary syndrome
ConclusionHigher CONUT scores were associated with unfavorable outcomes in patients with ACS. Malnutrition assessed by the CONUT score may provide valuable prognostic information in patients with ACS.

Predictors of Stroke Outcome Extracted from Multivariate Linear Discriminant Analysis or Neural Network Analysis.
CONCLUSION: Both the multivariate linear discriminant and neural network analyses identified the same indicators, such as nutritional status and serum ALP levels. These indicators were independently associated with functional stroke outcome. PMID: 33298664 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Influence of cardiovascular risk factors on arterial hypertension and mild cognitive impairment in 4602 participants of the ELITE study
Background: In ELITE (Ernährung, Lebensstil und individuelle Information zur Verhinderung von Herzinfarkt, Schlaganfall und Demenz; german for: Nutrition, Lifestyle and Individual Information for the Prevention of Heart Attack, Stroke and Dementia) data on cardiovascular risk factors, cognitive function and quality of life are prospectively collected, which will be improved through targeted individual information. The aim is to improve the health of the participants and identify the reasons for the lack of implementation. Methods: Risk factors of 4602 participants were linked to (controlled) hypertension and mi...
