Monitoring risk and preventing ischemic stroke in the very old
This article examines current guidelines and evidence regarding medical management, lifestyle changes, and psychosocial interactions that can contribute to the primary and secondary prevention of ischemic stroke in the very old.AREAS COVERED: The authors conducted a literature search for ischemic stroke prevention and risk assessment in the elderly via PubMed. Furthermore, they describe current strategies for monitoring risk and preventing ischemic stroke in the elderly population.EXPERT OPINION: Ischemic stroke poses a significant health risk to the elderly, with prevention relying on managing modifiable risk factors such...

The Ketogenic Diet but not Hydroxycitric Acid Keeps Brain Mitochondria Quality Control and mtDNA Integrity Under Focal Stroke
AbstractMitochondrial dysfunction in the ischemic brain is one of the hallmarks of stroke. Dietary interventions such as the ketogenic diet and hydroxycitric acid supplementation (a caloric restriction mimetic) may potentially protect neurons from mitochondrial damage induced by focal stroke in mice. We showed that in control mice, the ketogenic diet and the hydroxycitric acid did not impact significantly on the mtDNA integrity and expression of genes involved in the maintenance of mitochondrial quality control in the brain, liver, and kidney. The ketogenic diet changed the bacterial composition of the gut microbiome, whic...

Ischaemic stroke with multi-focal venous and arterial thrombosis due to hyperhomocysteinemia: anabolic androgenic steroid use and MTHFR c.667 C   >  T variant – a case report
Severely elevated serum homocysteine is a rare cause of ischaemic stroke and extra-cranial arterial and venous thrombosis. Several factors can lead to mild elevation of homocysteine including dietary folate an...

The Relationship of Tobacco Use and Migraine: A Narrative Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTobacco use is associated with significant health consequences especially for people with medical conditions. Although lifestyle strategies (e.g., sleep, diet) are commonly recommended as part of migraine treatment, tobacco-related strategies (e.g., smoking cessation) are rarely included. This review is aimed at elucidating what is known about tobacco use and migraine and at identifying gaps in the research.Recent FindingsThe prevalence of smoking is higher among people with migraine, and people with migraine believe that smoking makes migraine attacks worse. There is also evidence that smoking may...

Secondary Ischemic Stroke Prevention
AbstractThe health burden of ischemic stroke is high and will continue to increase with an aging population. Recurrent ischemic stroke is increasingly recognized as a major public health concern with potentially debilitating sequelae. Thus, it is imperative to develop and implement effective strategies for stroke prevention. When considering secondary ischemic stroke prevention, it is important to consider the mechanism of the first stroke and the related vascular risk factors. Secondary ischemic stroke prevention typically includes multiple medical and, potentially, surgical treatments, but with the shared goal of reducin...

Health behavior of young patients with ischemic stroke in Estonia: A score of five factors
ConclusionsBefore stroke, young patients displayed significantly worse health behavior than the general population. The largest differences were found for smoking and obesity, and a cumulation of risk factors was observed via the HBSR score.

Benefits in quality of life following an obstructive sleep apnea screening and treatment program in patients with acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Although more evidence is needed, a significant improvement in QOL was suggested after our OSA intervention, particularly in patients with good CPAP adherence.PMID:36782347 | DOI:10.33588/rn.7604.2022359
