Safety and Outcome of Endovascular Treatment for Minor Ischemic Stroke: Results From the Multicenter Clinical Registry of Endovascular Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke in the Netherlands
Goal: Insufficient data is available about safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with minor stroke symptoms because these patients were excluded from most randomized trials. We aimed to compare characteristics, functional outcome, and complications in patients with minor ischemic stroke National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score ≤5 (NIHSS score ≤5) and moderate to severe ischemic stroke (NIHSS score ≥6) due to intracranial proximal artery occlusion of the anterior circulation who underwent EVT.

Plasma Levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor are Associated with Prognosis in the Acute Phase of Ischemic Stroke
Context: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin involved in neuronal survival, differentiation, and maturation. Purpose: To evaluate the levels of BDNF in the acute phase of stroke and their potential association with neurological impairment. Methods: Patients in the acute phase of ischemic stroke were evaluated with the following clinical tools: National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, modified Rankin scale, Gugging Swallowing Screen and Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score.

Hypothesis: Presymptomatic treatment of Sturge-Weber Syndrome With Aspirin and Antiepileptic Drugs May Delay Seizure Onset
Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) is a neurocutaneous disorder caused by a somatic mosaic mutation in GNAQ.1 SWS brain involvement causes seizures, stroke-like episodes and/or neurological deficits such as hemiparesis and intellectual disability. Seventy-five percent of infants with SWS will develop seizures within the first year of life.2 Those with more severe epilepsy experience greater cognitive deficits and intellectual disability.3 There is ictal single-photon emission computed tomography evidence that, in SWS, the seizures themselves may contribute to the brain injury due to an abnormal hemodynamic response.

Epidemiology and Outcomes of Ischemic Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack in the Adult and Geriatric Population
Background: Rate of ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) increases with age. There is lack of evidence on how age affects treatment strategies and outcomes. Our aim is to compare epidemiology of ischemic strokes and TIAs in adult and geriatric populations including risk factors, treatment delivered, and outcomes. Design: We designed a retrospective cross-sectional review of patients admitted to neurology with diagnosis of stroke or TIA from 2010 to 2015. Obtained variables were: age, sex, risk factors, acute therapy, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale on admission and discharge, and disposition.

Race is a Predictor of Withdrawal of Life Support in Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage
Introduction: Medical and socioeconomic factors may impact decisions to change the goals of care for patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) to comfort measures only. Methods: We reviewed prospectively collected data on patients with ICH, including baseline patient demographics, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and ICH score. We conducted multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify predictors of change to comfort measures only status. Results: Of 198 patients included in the analysis, 39 (19.7%) were made comfort measures only.

Laterality is an Independent Predictor of Endovascular Thrombectomy in Patients With Low National Institute of Health Stroke Scale
Endovascular thrombectomy (ET) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large-vessel occlusion (LVO) is offered to select patients meeting strict criteria. One of the criteria is stroke severity as indicated by the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Inherently, NIHSS is biased towards left hemisphere strokes (LHS) with median NIHSS score 4 points higher than right hemisphere strokes (RHS). This may potentially affect clinical decision making and thrombectomy eligibility. We sought to test this hypothesis.
