Clinical diagnostic utility of transcranial magnetic stimulation in neurological disorders. Updated report of an IFCN committee
Clin Neurophysiol. 2023 Mar 29;150:131-175. doi: 10.1016/j.clinph.2023.03.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe review provides a comprehensive update (previous report: Chen R, Cros D, Curra A, Di Lazzaro V, Lefaucheur JP, Magistris MR, et al. The clinical diagnostic utility of transcranial magnetic stimulation: report of an IFCN committee. Clin Neurophysiol 2008;119(3):504-32) on clinical diagnostic utility of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in neurological diseases. Most TMS measures rely on stimulation of motor cortex and recording of motor evoked potentials. Paired-pulse TMS techniques, incorporating conventio...

Association of Dementia Risk With Focal Epilepsy and Modifiable Cardiovascular Risk Factors
This cross-sectional study examines data from the UK Biobank to explore the association between focal epilepsy compared with stroke or migraine and the risk of developing dementia and how that risk is affected by modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.

Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio is associated with the epilepsy after primary intracerebral hemorrhage
CONCLUSION: High NLR at admission is associated with an increased risk of PSE, which suggests that NLR may play a role in risk stratification in patients with ICH.PMID:36963316 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109177

Contribution of nuclear medicine to the diagnosis and management of primary brain tumours
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2023 Mar 16:S0035-3787(23)00874-3. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2023.03.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPositron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful tool that can help physicians manage primary brain tumours at diagnosis and follow-up. In this context, PET imaging is used with three main types of radiotracers: 18F-FDG, amino acid radiotracers, and 68Ga conjugated to somatostatin receptor ligands (SSTRs). At initial diagnosis, 18F-FDG helps to characterize primary central nervous system (PCNS) lymphomas and high-grade gliomas, amino acid radiotracers are indicated for gliomas, and SSTR PET ligands are in...

Clinical Biomarkers and Prediction Models for Poststroke Epilepsy: Have We Settled the Scores Yet?
In an era of time-dependent reperfusion and recanalization therapy for stroke leading to improved survival, there is a growing population at risk of poststroke epilepsy (PSE). Accumulating evidence suggests a multidirectional interaction among stroke, PSE, and dementia in stroke survivors. There is no evidence to justify prophylactic antiseizure medication (ASM) to reduce these morbidities. Although several predictive molecular biomarkers and scoring models have been proposed, they remain inadequately validated for stratifying risk and indicating who will benefit from prophylactic ASM. Studies leveraging advances in geneti...

Epileptiform activity in the acute phase of stroke predicts the outcomes in patients without seizures
ConclusionsAbnormalities in EEG without clinical manifestation are present in 40% of patients with acute stroke. Changes in EEG in acute stroke are associated with a poor neurological status in the first days and poor functional status in the chronic period of stroke.

Prevalence, electroclinical spectrum and effect on the outcome of non-convulsive status epilepticus in critically ill patients; the utility of routine electroencephalogram
Epilepsy Behav. 2023 Feb 28;141:109144. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109144. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVES: To highlight the importance of routine electroencephalogram (rEEG) in detecting non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE), describing the electroclinical spectrum and effect on outcome in critically ill patients with altered mental status (CIPAMS).METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at King Fahd University Hospital. Clinical data and EEG recordings of CIPAMS to rule out NCSE were reviewed. All patients had at least 30 minutes of EEG recording. The Salzburg Consensus criteria (SCC) were applied to d...
