Cardiac Risk Factors for Stroke: A Comprehensive Mendelian Randomization Study
CONCLUSIONS: Available genetic data do not support substantial effects of cardiac traits on the risk of stroke beyond known clinical risk factors. Our findings highlight the need to carefully control for confounding and other potential biases in studies examining candidate cardiac risk factors for stroke.PMID:34911345 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.121.036306

Electrocardiographic left atrial abnormality and stroke subtype in the atherosclerosis risk in communities study
ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the relationship between abnormally increased P‐wave terminal force in lead V1, an electrocardiographic (ECG) marker of left atrial abnormality, and incident ischemic stroke subtypes. We hypothesized that associations would be stronger with nonlacunar stroke, given that we expected left atrial abnormality to reflect the risk of thromboembolism rather than in situ cerebral small‐vessel occlusion. MethodsOur cohort comprised 14,542 participants 45 to 64 years of age prospectively enrolled in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study and free of clinically apparent atrial f...

Interrelationship between electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy, QT prolongation, and ischaemic stroke: the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study
Conclusion The combination of ECG-LVH and prolonged QT is associated with a higher risk of ischaemic stroke compared with either condition in isolation, and the stroke risk for each condition does not depend on the presence of the other.

Incidence, lethality, and post-stroke functional status in different Brazilian macro-regions: The SAMBA study (analysis of stroke in multiple Brazilian areas)
ConclusionThis study expands the knowledge of stroke epidemiology in Brazil, a middle-income country with enormous socioeconomic and cultural diversity. The discrepancy observed regarding the impact of stroke in patients from Joinville and Sobral highlights the need to improve the strategic allocation of resources to meet the health priorities in each location.

Prevalence of Patent Foramen Ovale in Ischaemic Stroke in Italy: Results of SISIFO Study
Conclusion: If any relationship exists between stroke and PFO, this is more likely in PACI and POCI at a younger age. Our results are consistent with recent findings that underline PFO alone must not be considered a significant independent predictor for stroke; so the presence of PFO alone doesn't permit rushed causal correlations or ‘therapeutic aggressiveness'.Cerebrovasc Dis 2015;39:162-169

Advanced interatrial block and ischemic stroke: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
Conclusions: In the ARIC, aIAB was associated with incident ischemic stroke, which strengthens the hypothesis that left atrial disease should be considered an independent stroke risk factor.

Sensitive Detection of Atrial Fibrillation in Acute Stroke Patients by Short-Term Bedside Electrocardiography Monitoring Software Analysis
Conclusion: SRA was found to be highly sensitive to detect possible or definitive AF in clinical routine within a short monitoring time. However, low specificity and poor accuracy do not allow diagnosing AF by SRA alone, but with the high NPV compared to current diagnostic standard, it is a valid diagnostic tool to rule out AF. Thereby, SRA is a contribution to clarify stroke etiology.Cerebrovasc Dis 2018;45:54 –60

Predictors of 30-day mortality among patients with stroke admitted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Northwestern Tanzania: A prospective cohort study
ConclusionStroke is associated with a high 30-day mortality rate in Northwestern Tanzania. Concerted efforts are warranted in managing patients with stroke, with particular attention to individuals with severe strokes, ECG abnormalities, and swallowing difficulties to reduce early morbidity and mortality.

Clinical features of ischemic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation combined with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis
ConclusionNVAF with ICAS ischemic stroke is more likely to occur in older patients. Infarctions occurred mainly in the right cerebral hemisphere. Neurological deficits in NVAF are more severe than those in NVAF combined with ICAS and in simple ICAS ischemic strokes. HsCRP, LEVF, andNTpro-BNP seem to be closely associated with NVAF+ICAS ischemic stroke.

Stroke in cardiac sarcoidosis: Need to worry?
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemic stroke in patients with CS can be attributed to a cardioembolic phenomenon. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed for early diagnosis and management of these patients. PMID: 33189209 [PubMed - in process]

The effect of postoperative stroke and myocardial infarction on long-term survival after carotid revascularization
Introduction: The largest randomized controlled trial that compared the efficacy of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) with carotid artery stenting (CAS) showed equivalent outcomes for the composite end point of postoperative stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), or death. However, CAS had a higher risk of postoperative stroke, and CEA had a higher risk of MI. We hypothesize that there is a differential association of postoperative stroke, compared with that of postoperative MI, with reduced long-term survival after carotid revascularization when compared with neither complication. Methods: The Vascular Study Group of New England d...
