A Prospective Cohort Study of Patients With Transient Ischemic Attack to Identify High-Risk Clinical Characteristics Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Patients with TIA with their first TIA, language disturbance, duration of symptoms ≥10 minutes, gait disturbance, atrial fibrillation, infarction on computed tomography, elevated platelets or glucose, unilateral weakness, history of carotid stenosis, and elevated diastolic blood pressure are at higher risk for an impending stroke. Patients with vertigo and no high-risk features are at low risk. The Canadian TIA Score quantifies the impending stroke risk following TIA.

Prevalence of Patent Foramen Ovale in Ischaemic Stroke in Italy: Results of SISIFO Study
Conclusion: If any relationship exists between stroke and PFO, this is more likely in PACI and POCI at a younger age. Our results are consistent with recent findings that underline PFO alone must not be considered a significant independent predictor for stroke; so the presence of PFO alone doesn't permit rushed causal correlations or ‘therapeutic aggressiveness'.Cerebrovasc Dis 2015;39:162-169

Port Harcourt Stroke Registry: A Prospective Hospital Based Study. (P1.074)
CONCLUSION: This Stroke Registry, first of its kind from this region of Nigeria presents a handy tool to track the epidemiology of stroke in this region. It will contribute to stroke prevention by providing the evidence required to formulate policies and measures required to control identified risk factors.Disclosure: Dr. Okunoye has nothing to disclose. Diagnosis of Acute Stroke.
Abstract Stroke can be categorized as ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Awakening with or experiencing the abrupt onset of focal neurologic deficits is the hallmark of the diagnosis of ischemic stroke. The most common presenting symptoms of ischemic stroke are speech disturbance and weakness on one-half of the body. The most common conditions that can mimic a stroke are seizure, conversion disorder, migraine headache, and hypoglycemia. Taking a patient history and performing diagnostic studies will usually exclude stroke mimics. Neuroimaging is required to differentiate ischemi...

A pragmatic approach to sonothrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke: the Norwegian randomised controlled sonothrombolysis in acute stroke study (NOR-SASS)
DiscussionNOR-SASS is the first randomised controlled trial designed to test the superiority of contrast enhanced ultrasound treatment given ≤4½ hours after stroke onset in an unselected acute ischaemic stroke population eligible or not eligible for intravenous thrombolysis, with or without a defined arterial occlusion on CTA. If a positive effect and safety can be proven, contrast enhanced ultrasound treatment will be an option for all acute ischaemic stroke patients. Chronic effects of stroke on hip bone density and tibial morphology: a longitudinal study
Conclusions There is evidence of continuous trabecular bone loss in the paretic tibial distal epiphysis among chronic stroke patients, but it tends to plateau after 2 years of stroke onset. The steady state may have been reached earlier in the hip and tibial diaphysis.

Dairy Consumption and Risk of Stroke: A Case‑control Study
Conclusions: We found a significant positive association between high‑fat dairy consumption and risk of stroke. Further prospective studies are required to confirm this finding. Keywords: Dairy intake, diet, food frequency questionnaire, stroke

Acute Ischemic Stroke as a Presenting Feature of Multiple Myeloma (P3.279)
Conclusions:Stroke is a leading and preventable cause of disability in the US adult population. The majority of strokes are due to atherosclerotic vascular or cardioembolic disease. Understanding the diagnostic work up of stroke and recognizing rare etiologies like MM is important for stroke prevention. This brings to light the importance of recognizing stroke as an initial presenting feature of multiple myeloma and of multiple myeloma as an important treatable etiology of stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Chung has nothing to disclose. Risk factors of stroke recurrence in a low income country: case of Senegal (P6.289)
Conclusions:Stroke recurrence is relatively frequent in Senegal. Frequently, patients are irregularly followed up sometimes because of the unavailability of neurologists and neurology unit in peripheral regions and the cost of treatment. Effort should be done to improve the management of cardiovascular risk factors.Disclosure: Dr. Gams Massi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Nyassinde has nothing to disclose.

P-016 Relationship between stroke recurrence, infarct pattern, and vascular distribution in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis
Conclusion We determined that basilar artery stenosis was most likely to present as a perforator stroke. As expected, patients discharged with suboptimal medical therapy were twice as likely to have a recurrent stroke (29% versus 13%). Among patients with optimal medical therapy, no recurrent strokes were seen in patients with embolic infarct pattern, while 57% recurrence rate was seen in patients with a watershed infarct pattern, suggesting that an embolic infarct pattern on initial presentation is possibly related to underlying plaque instability that is modifiable with optimal medical therapy. On the other hand, initial...

FDA clears software using AI to evaluate CT scans for stroke
Artificial Intelligence healthcare developer Viz.ai said this week it won approval from the FDA for its LVO Stroke platform designed to analyze computed tomography results and notify providers of potential strokes, touting it as the first such system to win FDA clearance. The company’s LVO Stroke platform is designed using deep learning and connects to a hospital CT scanner to alert stroke specialists that a suspected LVO stroke has been identified, with the ability to send radiological images directly to the physician’s phones. “Timely LVO stroke identification and transfer to a specialist hospital that ...

Recanalisation therapies for wake-up stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: There is insufficient evidence from randomised controlled trials for recommendations concerning recanalisation therapies for wake-up stroke. Results from ongoing trials will hopefully establish the efficacy and safety of such therapies. PMID: 30129656 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Description of stroke mimics after complete neurovascular assessment
ConclusionsIn our sample, 8.8% of all diagnoses of ischaemic stroke were SM. These events have different demographic, clinical, and prognostic characteristics; epilepsy is the most common aetiology. Despite receiving specialised emergency care, 19 patients with SM (4.7%) were treated with intravenous fibrinolysis.

Lesion-aphasia discordance in acute stroke among Bengali-speaking patients: Frequency, pattern, and effect on aphasia recovery
ConclusionLesion-aphasia discordance following acute stroke is not uncommon among Bengali-speaking subjects. In the discordant group, preponderance towards non-fluent aphasia was observed. Discordance occurred more frequently after hemorrhagic stroke. Subjects with lesion-discordant aphasia presented better recovery during early post-stroke phase.

Sentinel headache as a warning symptom of ischemic stroke
ConclusionsA new type of headache and a previous kind of headache with altered characteristics during one week before stroke are significantly more prevalent than in controls. These headaches represent sentinel headaches. Sudden onset of such headaches should alarm about stroke.
