Impact of methodological choices on a meta-analysis of real-world evidence comparing non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants with vitamin K antagonists for the treatment of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Conclusions Sensitivity analyses showed the impact of similar assumptions was different depending on the outcome, and the drug considered. The development of recommendations and guidelines for the inclusion of RWE in meta-analyses could prove useful in evaluating the effectiveness of health care interventions. Economic evaluation of prolonged and enhanced ECG Holter monitoring in acute ischemic stroke patients.
Conclusions: EPM yielded reduced not significantly different costs without affecting QoL and may be a useful strategy to detect PAF in acute ischemic stroke patients in time. PMID: 31315471 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Association Between the Use of Antiarrhythmic Drugs in Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation and Patient Prognosis Using Data from the China Atrial Fibrillation (China-AF) Registry.
CONCLUSIONS AAD usage was associated with lower risk of 1-year all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death in "real-world" patients with NVAF. PMID: 31256190 [PubMed - in process]

Worsening renal function, adverse clinical events, and major determinants for changes of renal function in patients with atrial fibrillation: a Japanese multicenter registry substudy.
Conclusion: Age ≥75 years, body weight ≤50 kg, a history of heart failure, and initially preserved renal function appear to promote renal dysfunction in patients with AF, but a history of AF ablation seems to have a favorable effect. Worsening renal function seems to increase AF patients' risk of adverse clinical events. Renal function can decline quickly; thus, early intervention including AF ablation is warranted. Warfarin therapy in Chinese patients with atrial fibrillation treated with percutaneous coronary intervention: a 5-year follow-up retrospective cohort study.
Conclusions: Warfarin reduces the incidence of MACCEs but does not increase bleeding events in Chinese patients with AF who underwent PCI. For patients taking warfarin, recurrent myocardial infarction and a baseline CHA2DS2-VASc score >4 were related to MACCE occurrence. PMID: 31144555 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Continuation with apixaban treatment is associated with lower risk for hospitalization and medical costs among elderly patients.
Conclusion: Elderly patients with NVAF in the U.S. who continued with apixaban treatment had a lower risk of MB-related hospitalization and lower MB- and stroke/SE-related medical costs compared to patients who switched to another OAC. PMID: 31120309 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-Term Persistence with Newly-Initiated Warfarin or Non-VKA Oral Anticoagulant (NOAC) in Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation: Insights from the Prospective China-AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS Treatment persistence of NOACs was lower than that of warfarin among Chinese patients with AF. Patients with characteristics of non-persistence predictors need special attention to maintain their therapy. PMID: 30971681 [PubMed - in process]

Effectiveness and safety of rivaroxaban in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: data from a contemporary Spanish registry.
CONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary Spanish cohort of NVAF patients on rivaroxaban, patients had many comorbidities, a high thromboembolic risk and a moderate bleeding risk. Overall, rates of stroke and bleeding complications were low and similar to other previous studies. These data suggest that rivaroxaban is effective and safe in routine practice. Safety and Efficacy of Triple Antithrombotic Therapy with Dabigatran versus Vitamin K Antagonist in Atrial Fibrillation Patients: A Pilot Study.
Conclusion: Dabigatran at the dose used for stroke prevention appears safer than VKA and maintains a similar efficacy profile, when used with DAPT, in AF patients who have undergone PCI with stenting for ACS. PMID: 30895193 [PubMed - in process]

Big data adds clarity, certainty to clinical trial outcomes for AFib
ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The 33 million people with atrial fibrillation worldwide not only suffer from bothersome symptoms, but also face a fivefold increased risk of stroke and a twofold increased risk of death. Research teams led by Mayo Clinic published three connected studies on Friday, March 15, clarifying the benefits of catheter ablation versus rate- [...]

Bioinformatic gene analysis for potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets of atrial fibrillation-related stroke
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most prevalent sustained arrhythmias, however, epidemiological data may understate its actual prevalence. Meanwhile, AF is considered to be a major cause of ischemic stro...

Mandibular Advancement Devices in Patients with Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Review.
Authors: Wojda M, Jurkowski P, Lewandowska A, Mierzwińska-Nastalska E, Kostrzewa-Janicka J Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder resulting from the repetitive narrowing and collapse of the upper respiratory tract. The results of previous epidemiological studies confirm a significant impact of OSA on the health situation around the world. Untreated OSA is associated with many adverse health effects, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, and daytime sleepiness. Excessive mortality of OSA patients, especially in men under 50 years o...
