Hemodialysis with end-stage renal disease did not raise the risk of intracranial hemorrhage after a head injury
Conclusions: HD +ESRD did not increase the post-HI risk of ICH. Therefore, it may not be necessary to lower the threshold of head CT in HD +ESRD patients.

Complex Anatomy Difficulting Left Atrial Appendage Closure
A 65 year-old man was referred for progressive neurological impairment. He had severe obesity, hypertension, type-2 diabetes and was a former smoker. Computed tomography showed a 11 x 10 mm basilar artery aneurysm. ECG revealed a persistent atrial fibrillation. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed mild left atrial enlargement and no structural heart disease was noted. An estimated CHA2DS2-VASc score of 3 indicated a 3.2%/year stroke risk and oral anticoagulation was considered. However, cerebral aneurysm rupture rate was elevated (estimated at 14.5% risk/5 years) [1,2] and thus oral anticoagulation was contraindicated.

Valacyclovir and Acyclovir Neurotoxicity With Status Epilepticus
We present the case of a 52-year-old man with hypertension, diastolic congestive heart failure, end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis 3 times a week and a remote history of a hemorrhagic stroke who presented to the emergency department with a vesicular rash on his left arm. The rash was observed to be in a dermatomal distribution, and a diagnosis of herpes zoster was made. The patient was discharged home on valacyclovir 1 g 3 times a day for a duration of 7 days. The patient took 2 doses of valacyclovir before presenting to the hospital again with irritability and hallucinations. Over the next several days, the patient's...

Computational tools could change the way sleep apnea is treated
Imagine that before performing surgery, doctors could consult software that would determine the actual effectiveness of the procedure before even lifting a scalpel. With the use of a computational model of the human airway being developed by Jeff Eldredge, a professor at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at UCLA, people who suffer from sleep apnea may one day benefit from such a scenario. Previously, Eldredge, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, had been working on creating models that simulated the interactions between blood and vessel walls with Shao-Ching Huang, an expert in h...

Risk Factors for Silent Lacunar Infarction in Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack.
CONCLUSIONS Age, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and carotid stenosis were independently associated with silent lacunar infarction in patients with TIA. PMID: 26864634 [PubMed - in process]

Modification of Sodium Release Using Porous Corn Starch and Lipoproteic Matrix
Abstract Excessive sodium consumption can result in hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, and kidney diseases. Various chips and extruded snacks, where salt is mainly applied on the product surface, accounted for almost 56% of snacks retail sales in 2010. Hence, it is important to target sodium reduction for those snack products. Past studies had shown that modifying the rate‐release mechanism of sodium is a promising strategy for sodium reduction in the food industry. Encapsulation of salt can be a possible technique to control sodium release rate. Porous corn starch (PCS), created by enzymatic treatment and s...

Visceral Fat Triggers Heart Disease
I tell my patients to avoid drinking soda not just because they make you fat. Each sip of soda affects your health. Soda puts you at risk for health problems like metabolic syndrome. This is a collection of symptoms that can lead to diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases, like cancer. Soft drinks are the beverage of choice for millions of Americans. The latest research now reveals that sodas are a major cause of visceral fat — the deadliest kind of fat you can have, inflaming your tissues, rotting your blood vessels and upsetting your body chemistry. In a minute I’m going to tell you about a great healthy ...

Summary: International Kidney Cancer Symposium
Conclusions:  Ideal ischemia time is 20-25 minutes or less improves short and long term renal function.  >25 minutes carried 5 year risk of new onset stage 4 CKD No differences on GFR for cold vs. warm ischemia times Preoperative GFR and the percent of kidney preserved was a better predictor of post op GFR.  No ischemia preserves renal function better than warm. Longer cold ischemia times were equivalent to shorter warm ischemia times. Quality and quantity of the remaining kidney is associated with ultimate renal function. Arrive: A retrospective registry of Indian patients with venous thromboembolism
Conclusion: Acute DVT alone was responsible for the substantial burden of VTE in Indian patients. Bleeding was not the limiting factor for anticoagulant treatment in most patients.

Clostridium septicum Pneumocephalus
Conclusions Clostridium septicum is an uncommon and often fatal cause of nontraumatic pneumocephalus. This underscores the need for a high index of clinical suspicion in cases with unexplained pneumocephalus, as early diagnosis remains the key to survival. In survivors of C. septicum infection, subsequent colonoscopy should be considered to exclude undiagnosed or occult gastrointestinal malignancy.

Asymptomatic Pulmonary Embolism after Ablation
Conclusion: The incidence of random asymptomatic PE in AF patients is high (>8%). The CHA2DS2-VASc score can predict silent PE. Since patients with a high CHA2DS2-VASc score are already anticoagulated, our results do not change clinical practice but are noteworthy in terms of the cause-effect relationship between AF and PE.Cardiology 2016;134:426-432

Coronary artery calcium scores and cardiovascular risk factors in 31,545 asymptomatic Korean adults
Abstract The aims of this study were to identify the distribution of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) by age group and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and to evaluate the association between CV risk factors and CACS classification in asymptomatic adults. The study included 31,545 asymptomatic Koreans, over 20 years of age with no previous history of malignancy, proven coronary artery disease, or stroke, who underwent CACS computed tomography at the Health Promotion Center, Samsung Medical Center, between January 2005 and June 2013. Mean (±SD) age was 53.8 (±8.5) years overall, 56.1 (±8.3) in men, and 53.3 ...

Cohort of renal infarction during 2years at Grenoble teaching hospital.
CONCLUSION: Delay of diagnosis is a real problem for renal infarction, and need to be evocated every flank pain. LDH elevation may help clinician to suggest renal infarction and lead to CT scan. Association of delayed inflammatory syndrome, hypertension and hypokalemia after flank pain strongly suggest renal infarction. PMID: 27180563 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
