Am J Chin Med. 2022 Jul 23:1-53. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X2250063X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAngelica gigas Nakai (AGN) root is a medicinal herbal widely used in traditional medicine in Korea. AGN root ethanolic extract dietary supplements are marketed in the United States for memory health and pain management. We comprehensively reviewed the anticancer, analgesic, pro-memory and other bio-activities of AGN extract and its signature phytochemicals decursin, decursinol angelate, and decursinol a decade ago in 2012 and updated their anticancer activities in 2015. In the last decade, significant progress has been made for u...

Tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) persistence and reasons for discontinuation in a predominantly male cohort with axial spondyloarthritis
AbstractAlthough tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) have favorably altered the treatment landscape for patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), there is limited data regarding TNFi persistence and reasons for discontinuation. This is an observational time-to-event study utilizing data collected for a prospective multiple-disease registry of US Veterans with axSpA treated with TNFi therapies and recruited over a 10  year period. Clinical, serological, and comorbid parameters were collected. Corporate Data Warehouse Pharmacy files provided courses of the 5 TNFi agents, and response to treatment was documented. In...

Associations between cardiorespiratory fitness and diverticulitis in older adults
by Bong Kil Song, Joey M. Saavedra, Elizabeth C. Lefferts, Angelique G. Brellenthin, Duck-chul Lee ObjectivesExamine the independent and joint associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body mass index (BMI) with the prevalence of diverticulitis in older adults. Methods476 older adults (61% Female; 71 ± 5 years) with no history of myocardial infarction, stroke, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or diabetes were included in this cross-sectional study. Diverticulitis cases were identified by self-reported physician diagnosis from the medical history questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to calculate the odd...

Advancements of Prussian blue-based nanoplatforms in biomedical fields: Progress and perspectives
J Control Release. 2022 Oct 7:S0168-3659(22)00677-0. doi: 10.1016/j.jconrel.2022.10.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrussian blue (PB) nanoparticles possess excellent physicochemical properties, including imaging features, robust photothermal conversion ability, catalytic activity, surface modifiability, effective drug loading, good stability, biocompatibility and biodegradability. With the advancement of nanotechnology, diverse PB-based nanoplatforms have been developed for biomedical applications. This review systematically summarized recent studies on PB-based nanoplatforms in the treatment of tumor (photothermal the...

Management and long-term outcomes of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases experiencing ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: The SCALIM registry
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 1 in 20 patients with STEMI has CID. We found no effect of CID on long-term survival. However, patients on corticosteroid therapy appeared to have higher rates of death during follow-up. Whether this finding is related to the use of corticosteroids or to the more progressive nature of their condition warrants further investigation.PMID:36372664 | DOI:10.1016/j.acvd.2022.09.003

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Neurodegenerative Diseases
Gut Liver. 2023 Feb 27. doi: 10.5009/gnl220523. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA growing body of evidence has demonstrated an intricate association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and neurodegenerative conditions, expanding beyond previous foci of comorbidities between IBD and mood disorders. These new discoveries stem from an improved understanding of the gut-microbiome-brain axis: specifically, the ability of the intestinal microbiota to modulate inflammation and regulate neuromodulatory compounds. Clinical retrospective studies incorporating large sample sizes and population-based cohorts have demonstrated and c...

Inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway as promising therapeutic candidates for inflammatory diseases (Review)
Int J Mol Med. 2023 Apr;51(4):35. doi: 10.3892/ijmm.2023.5238. Epub 2023 Mar 24.ABSTRACTThe inflammasome regulates innate immunity by serving as a signaling platform. The Nod‑like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, equipped with NLRP3, the adaptor protein apoptosis‑associated speck‑like protein (ASC) and pro‑caspase‑1, is by far the most extensively studied and well‑characterized inflammasome. A variety of stimuli can activate the NLRP3 inflammasome. When activated, the NLRP3 protein recruits the adaptor ASC protein and activates pro‑caspase‑1, resulting in inflammatory cytokine maturation and secreti...
