The Racial Gap in U.S. Stroke Deaths Got Worse During the Pandemic
NEW YORK — The longstanding racial gap in U.S. stroke death rates widened dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, government researchers said Thursday.
Stroke death rates increased for both Black and white adults in 2020 and 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. But the difference between the two groups grew about 22%, compared with the five years before the pandemic.

Stroke as an Antecedent Risk Factor for Depression among Post-Menopausal Women
ConclusionsA significant association between previous stroke and current depression was found in this population, independent of vascular disease risk measures among post-menopausal women. These findings highlight the possible importance of screening for and treating depression among stroke survivors. Longitudinal studies need to be conducted assessing the mental health impact of stroke.Key messagesOccurrence of stroke may lead to an increased likelihood of depression, especially among post-menopausal women.Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, surveillance efforts should include mental health complication including those related to stroke.

Characteristic of Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Based on TOAST Classification During COVID-19 Pandemic Era: A Single Centre Study
CONCLUSION: Patients with and without COVID-19 show varied distributions of stroke subtypes according to the TOAST categorization. Hypercoagulation is a major risk factor for stroke of undetermined etiology in individuals with COVID-19 who suffer from acute ischemic stroke. Patterns of disease are changing rapidly in LMICs. Pollution-related chronic diseases are becoming more common. This shift presents a particular problem for children, who are proportionately more heavily exposed than are adults to environmental pollutants and for whom these exposures are especially dangerous. Better quantification of environmental exposures and stepped-up efforts to understand how to prevent exposures that cause disease are needed in LMICs and around the globe.

The global obesity pandemic affects all age groups. A recent study, based on body mass index (BMI) in over 68 million subjects from 195 countries, suggests that prevalence of metabolic diseases was increased in high BMI subjects globally in the past 20 years [2]. The increased BMI has been shown to be pathogenically related to several diseases including cardiovascular and stroke-related diseases [3].
